The original game revolutionized the industry, bringing gaming into the mainstream and attracting a wider audience. Crucially, it moved away from the arcade format, which meant players no longer had to struggle with artificially high difficulty designed to make them spend more money.
Although the PlayStation wasn’t trying to directly copy arcade games, it definitely delivered challenging boss battles. Many levels ended with tough, relentless monsters that were as difficult as anything players faced on older NES and SNES games.
Ruby Weapon From Final Fantasy 7 Trapped Players In The Sand
Emerald and Ruby Weapon from Final Fantasy 7 are famous for being some of the first truly challenging optional bosses many players encountered. Both are incredibly difficult fights, but Ruby Weapon is generally considered a bit tougher, although Emerald Weapon is still a significant challenge, particularly because you need the Underwater Materia to even access it.
Ruby Weapon is a very tough opponent with a frustrating ability: it instantly knocks out two of your party members, forcing one hero to fight alone. A popular strategy to control who remains in the battle is to start the fight with two characters already unconscious. However, even with this preparation, winning against Ruby Weapon is extremely difficult and requires careful planning and fully upgraded Materia.
God From Dragon Quest 7 Brings The Wrath Of The Heavens
I’m telling you, Dragon Quest 7 (or Dragon Warrior 7 if you’re old school like me!) has a seriously epic main story – it’s way longer and more involved than most JRPGs I’ve played. And if you really sink your teeth into it, you have to try the ultimate challenge: a boss fight against, get this, God himself! He’s got a white beard and everything, and they call him The Almighty in the newer versions.
God is a tough opponent, with a lot of health and incredibly strong spells. If that’s not challenging enough, a harder version appears in the updated game, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, where players must battle him and four powerful elemental spirits simultaneously.
Philemon Is Waiting To Punish Persona 2 Players
Philemon is a recurring character in the Persona series. He was a prominent physical presence in the older games, but in recent titles, he appears as a butterfly and is the origin of the characters’ ability to summon Personas.
Players who complete the extremely challenging EX Dungeon in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment can battle Philemon. This powerful dream master is incredibly resilient, able to withstand even the strongest spells, and can retaliate with devastating attacks that can instantly defeat your entire party. The Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series are known for their difficult bosses, and Philemon is arguably the toughest one yet.
Truebred Eve Is The Final Challenge Of Parasite Eve’s Hardest Dungeon
Truebred Eve from Parasite Eve is arguably the most difficult boss on this list to unlock. Players need to beat the game at least once, then navigate the Chrysler Building—a sprawling 77-floor dungeon with randomized layouts and tough enemies on every level.
Okay, so I finally made it to the top of the Chrysler Building, and let me tell you, Truebred Eve is tough. You absolutely have to beat her to get the true ending, but she’s a real endurance test. Seriously, you need to be totally prepared – maxed out gear, fully stocked with everything, the works. If you go up there with anything less, she’ll one-shot you, and all that climbing will have been for nothing! It’s a brutal fight, she has so many hit points, but it’s worth it if you want to see how the story really ends.
SoulEdge/Inferno Thrashes Soul Blade/Soul Edge Players With Its Unfair Attacks
It’s not surprising to find a fighting game boss on this list, considering how challenging they were on the original PlayStation. Soulcalibur had a particularly tough final opponent: Cervantes, possessed by the evil spirit of his weapons. He’d become engulfed in flames and transform into the monstrous SoulEdge, later known as Inferno.
SoulEdge, while still fighting similarly to Cervantes with its dual-weapon style, hits much harder, capable of dealing significant damage with each attack. It also has some entirely new, powerful moves that Cervantes doesn’t have. Ultimately, though, this boss is mostly memorable for how it looks.
Ozma From Final Fantasy 9 Can’t Even Be Hit Without Finishing Sidequests
One of the best parts of Final Fantasy 9 is the Chocobo sidequest, where you can breed Chocobos and hunt for treasure. Successfully following a Chocobo into the sky leads to a surprisingly ominous location – it’s where you’ll find Ozma, the game’s strongest boss.
Ozma is a strange boss – it looks like a spinning sphere covered in colorful, shapeless patterns that vaguely resemble a face. It’s incredibly strong, capable of instantly defeating an entire party. To make things even more difficult, players have to complete a confusing sidequest just to be able to attack Ozma with close-range weapons, a classic example of the developers pushing players to buy strategy guides. Luckily, the GameFAQs website was around at the time, letting players learn how to beat Ozma without spending any money.
Luca Blight Takes On Three Parties In Suikoden 2
Typically, players defeat bosses with a single character or a group of adventurers. However, this boss is exceptionally strong, requiring three separate parties to battle him, followed by a one-on-one duel with the main character. This difficulty aligns with the story, as Luca Blight is described as possessing immense demonic strength and personally leads his troops into combat.
Luca Blight is incredibly resilient – it takes a lot to defeat him, even a surprise attack, multiple groups of adventurers, and being covered in arrows barely slow him down. The real frustration comes from fighting him in a duel; the battle can be lengthy, and if you almost win but fail at the last moment, you have to start the entire fight over again.
Motaro Is Unbelievably Cheap In Mortal Kombat Trilogy
The Mortal Kombat series is famous for its challenging boss battles, particularly in the early arcade games. Mortal Kombat Trilogy collected all of these bosses in one place, letting players compare them. Despite tough competition, Motaro is widely considered the most difficult boss to defeat in the game.
Motaro is a huge, powerful centaur who hits incredibly hard, and his attacks are difficult to avoid due to their strange shapes. What makes him especially frustrating is his ability to bounce back projectiles fired from a distance, limiting many players’ offensive options. While Mortal Kombat has always had tough bosses, Motaro might be the most unfair one yet.
Space Mama Is A Kitchen Nightmare In Rayman
PlayStation platformers were typically known for challenging levels, rather than tough boss battles – anyone who’s played Crash Bandicoot knows this is true. However, some games, like this one, feature truly difficult boss fights, and the battle against Space Mama is particularly notorious.
Space Mama’s attacks are reminiscent of Sans from Undertale, particularly her use of screen-filling lines that demand quick reactions. Her washing machine attack is also challenging – she hides behind it and fires lasers, making dodging nearly impossible, let alone allowing for a counterattack. Adding to the difficulty, this fight occurs at the end of a long and demanding level, often leading frustrated players to give up completely.
Wiegraf & Velius Trapped Players Forever In Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics is known for being very challenging at the beginning, but it gets much easier later on thanks to strong supporting characters who simplify battles. To reach that easier part, players have to beat Wiegraf, a boss considered by many to be the hardest in the entire Final Fantasy series.
The battle against Wiegraf begins as a one-on-one fight with Ramza, making magic-focused characters very vulnerable. Players who manage to overcome the first phase can summon their party, but Wiegraf then transforms into the powerful demon Velius, accompanied by a group of other demons. This fight is particularly frustrating because players can get stuck if they save before it, as they won’t be able to leave and level up, potentially forcing them to restart the whole game. It was such a difficult encounter that the developers eventually added an option to leave the castle.
