You know, I’m really glad to see The Creator popping up on HBO Max at #6 as of April 16, 2026. It didn’t do so well in theaters back in 2023, and it’s been hopping around streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video ever since. But the fact that it’s finding a new audience now just proves what I always thought – it’s a really cool movie with some amazing visuals and thought-provoking ideas. Honestly, it deserved more attention when it first came out, but I’m happy it’s finally getting some love.
John David Washington plays a soldier tasked with finding a powerful, artificial intelligence weapon called NOMAD, which could disable satellites. The story is set 15 years after a different AI caused a nuclear explosion in Los Angeles. While most of the world now fears AI, New Asia continues to use it, making it the ideal place for the weapon – a young AI named Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) – to hide.
Taylor discovers Alphie, a robot capable of controlling technology, and learns a shocking truth: Alphie’s creator was Taylor’s late wife, the brilliant mind behind New Asia’s artificial intelligence. This leads Taylor to rebel against his superiors and fight against NOMAD, ultimately ushering in an era of peace for peaceful AIs on Earth. The Creator offers a fresh take on the AI versus humanity trope, portraying the robots not as villains seeking destruction, but as beings simply wanting to live alongside humans.
Filmed in stunning locations throughout Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Nepal, The Creator returns to the roots of director Gareth Edwards’ style. The film blends real footage of people and places with impressive CGI, drawing viewers into a unique and believable world. Why The Creator Doesn’t Have a Sequel Yet

He even joked that getting asked to create a sequel would be a good problem for the studio to have.
Even with all its challenges, Gareth Edwards said he’d gladly make a sequel if asked. However, the film’s difficult production, combined with mixed reviews, probably means the studios won’t pursue one. Regardless, The Creator is finally getting the appreciation it deserves on streaming platforms, and it showcases Edwards’ impressive skills as a director.
