Director Ric Roman Waugh recently worked with Gerard Butler again on the disaster movie Greenland 2: Migration. While fans enjoyed seeing them collaborate on another post-apocalyptic film, many are hoping they’ll revive Butler’s popular action role as Mike Banning from the Has Fallen series. With Greenland 2 now released, the question is whether Waugh and Butler will team up for another high-octane Has Fallen movie. Sadly, the latest news isn’t promising for fans hoping for a return.
After directing Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, Ric Roman Waugh took the helm for 2019’s Angel Has Fallen. This installment features Mike Banning as a fugitive after being wrongly accused of trying to kill the President. Angel Has Fallen particularly split opinions – audiences enjoyed seeing Banning back in action, but critics generally found the film unremarkable.
A fourth film in the series, originally titled Night Has Fallen, was planned to begin filming in 2023. However, the recent Hollywood strikes have put the project on hold indefinitely. Director Ric Roman Waugh has now shared that there are currently no active plans for the movie, though he and the lead actor are still hoping to find a way to move the franchise forward. He discussed this with The Playlist.
The challenge is creating a new installment that doesn’t just feel like ‘more of the same.’ We need to show how Mike Banning and his family have grown and changed, and who they are now at this stage in their lives.
Neither of us wants to revisit that situation unless the emotional stakes and excitement are significantly higher this time around.

Recent news about the upcoming film Night Has Fallen contradicts previous statements made by Gerard Butler. The actor had mentioned they had a script and an exciting concept, but it seems plans have changed – possibly due to current events – and fans may have to wait longer to see Mike Banning back in action. MovieWeb has contacted representatives for comment.
The Has Fallen series has moved from movie theaters to television, and the latest installment, Paris Has Fallen, premiered in 2024. Originally shown on Canal+, it’s now available on Prime Video and Hulu. This spin-off takes place in Paris and centers on Tewfik Jallab (known from Squad 36), a security officer who joins forces with MI6 agent Ritu Arya (The Umbrella Academy) to thwart a terrorist organization led by Jacob Pearce, played by Sean Harris – a familiar face as the villain from Mission: Impossible.
