A former Superman is flying again, but there is a twist.
Over the years, many actors have portrayed Superman in various DC projects, both in live-action and animation. Iconic names like Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Tyler Hoechlin, and Henry Cavill have all left their mark on the character. Now, David Corenswet is taking on the role in the new DC Universe. Superman’s animated appearances are equally extensive, and he’s returning to animation with an unexpected casting choice.
Darren Criss will be joining season 3 of the animated series My Adventures with Superman as Conner Kent, also known as Superboy. This announcement follows previous news that the character would appear in the show, which stars Jack Quaid as Superman. The new season will adapt the famous “Reign of the Supermen” storyline from DC Comics, where several heroes stepped up after Superman’s apparent death. Although Superman won’t actually die in the series, characters like Superboy and Steel will still be introduced. Criss’s casting is unexpected, and here’s why.
Here’s a fresh look at Darren Criss as Superboy in season 3 of My Adventures with Superman, courtesy of Collider:
Chris Colfer is among the actors who have lent their voice to Superman over the years, and he played the role relatively recently. He first voiced the DC hero in the 2020 animated film Man of Tomorrow, and continued in the role for several movies within the Tomorrowverse series. His most recent performance as Superman was released on July 16, 2024, just before James Gunn’s DC Universe began with Creature Commandos in December. The movie, Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths — Part Three, concluded the Tomorrowverse, effectively ending that storyline to make way for the new DCU.
It’s a surprising move to see actor Darren Criss transition from playing Superman to Superboy so quickly, especially for the upcoming third season of My Adventures with Superman. According to showrunner Jake Wyatt, Superboy was the creative team’s favorite character to write for this season. With Criss now cast in the role, that enthusiasm makes perfect sense, as he’s expected to play a significant and compelling part in the show’s return.
Superboy’s costume is similar to Superman’s, but with some differences: he wears red fingerless gloves, has red accents on the sides of his suit, and doesn’t have a cape. Superboy will appear in season 3 of My Adventures with Superman following the introduction of Kiana Madeira as Supergirl in season 2, where she played a key role in the Brainiac storyline. Supergirl, now adjusting to life on Earth, will also be back for season 3. It will be interesting to see how Superman and Supergirl interact with Superboy.
The animated series My Adventures with Superman has received perfect reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences also generally enjoy it. The upcoming third season will feature the return of familiar actors like Alice Lee as Lois Lane and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, along with new casting for Superboy, building anticipation for the next installment of the DC show.
Okay, so I just found out that Season 3 of My Adventures with Superman is hitting screens on June 13th! You can catch it on Adult Swim’s Toonami block at midnight Eastern and Pacific time. If you’re more of a streamer, it’ll be available on HBO Max starting June 14th. I’m seriously excited about this – it’s a fantastic show!
