Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is known for his action movies, and one from 2018, based on a video game, didn’t do well in theaters. Now, almost ten years later, the film is getting a second release on .
On May 26th, Dwayne Johnson’s film Rampage will be available for subscribers to watch. Originally released in theaters in 2018, the movie earned $428 million worldwide. While successful, with a budget and marketing spend of around $260 million, it didn’t perform quite as well as some of Johnson’s bigger hits. Although a sequel was once discussed, those plans appear to have been abandoned as Johnson has moved on to other projects.
Dwayne Johnson Had Better Luck With Rampage Than Doom
Dwayne Johnson starred in two movies based on video games, and Rampage performed much better than his first attempt. He previously appeared in the 2005 film Doom, which was widely considered a critical failure and is often listed among the worst video game adaptations. While Rampage also received mixed reviews from critics (with a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences enjoyed it more, giving it a score of 71%.
The movie Rampage was inspired by the video game of the same name, created by Midway Games. In the game, players control George, a massive gorilla, Lizzie, a giant reptile, or Ralph, a werewolf-like monster. These characters were once humans, transformed into huge creatures similar to King Kong and Godzilla. The main objective of the game is to cause widespread destruction, demolishing buildings and wreaking havoc on everything – and everyone – in their path.
The Movie Reimagines the Plot of the Game
In the movie, Dwayne Johnson plays Davis Okoye, a scientist who studies primates and has a close bond with a rare, white gorilla named George. A dangerous genetic experiment goes wrong, and a virus causes several animals across the country to grow to gigantic sizes and become extremely aggressive. Along with George, a crocodile and a wolf are affected, paying homage to characters named Lizzie and Ralph from the original video game.
Davis joins forces with a geneticist, Naomie Harris, in a desperate attempt to save George before the army decides to destroy him and the other mutated animals. Even after his transformation, George still feels a connection to Davis, making him a more relatable and sympathetic creature. The story builds to a huge showdown between the giant animals right in the heart of Chicago.
Brad Peyton directed the film Rampage, with a screenplay by Ryan Engle, Carlton Cuse, Ryan J. Condal, and Adam Sztykiel. Dwayne Johnson and Naomie Harris lead the cast, which also includes Malin Akerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, P. J. Byrne, and Jack Quaid.
Rampage starts streaming on HBO Max on May 26.
