Okay, so everyone’s been waiting for more Yellowstone, and the new series, Dutton Ranch, definitely delivers. It focuses on Beth and Rip – Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are fantastic, as always – and shifts the story away from Jamie’s storyline. We’re introduced to a new character, Joaquin, played by Juan Pablo Raba, who’s Beulah Jackson’s adopted son, and he really shakes things up. This sequel picks up where Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone left off, and it started streaming on Paramount+ on May 15th. If you were a fan of the original, you’ll want to check this out!
The new show featuring Beth and Rip, which began with the first two episodes of Dutton Ranch, has quickly become popular with fans of Yellowstone. It received a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes right away. Although it’s not the only Yellowstone spin-off continuing the Dutton family’s story – Marshals, focusing on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), is also available on CBS – many viewers feel it’s the most direct continuation of the original series.
Yellowstone Replaces Jamie With Joaquin Reyes In Dutton Ranch Episode 3
The new series, Dutton Ranch, takes the place of Yellowstone and introduces a character who will take over Jamie’s part in the third episode. In the episode “Act of God Business,” Beth travels to Dallas to negotiate a deal, while Rip discovers their cattle have contracted foot-and-mouth disease, creating problems for the rest of the season. During her trip to Dallas, Beth also encounters Joaquin.
Joaquin is the son of Beluah Jackson and handles problems at her 10-Petal Ranch. The show explores his complicated relationship with his adoptive brother, Rob-Will (played by Jai Courtney), and with Beulah. In Episode 3, he reveals to Beth that while he grew up believing he was born to the Jacksons, he was actually adopted.
Joaquin’s involvement with the issues on Beulah Jackson’s ranch, and how close he’s become to the family, is starting to make him seem like another adopted son – similar to Beth’s brother, Jamie Dutton. Beth notices this and points it out to Joaquin, saying he reminds her of her father’s lawyer, a veiled comparison to Jamie.
Beth is trying to hide how much her brother’s actions – including his involvement in John Dutton’s death and the downfall of the governor – have affected her. While at a bar with Joaquin, she downplays her feelings, admitting that the situation is far from perfect when he asks if the comparison is positive, simply stating, “It’s not ideal.”
Joaquin isn’t a lawyer like Jamie, but he’s quickly becoming a powerful business manager and problem-solver. Right now, he’s working to fix the fallout from his brother’s actions – specifically, the murder of a ranch hand named Wes (Nakoa DeCoite). Because Rob-Will acts unpredictably, and Beth sees similarities between him and Jamie, comparing Joaquin to Jamie strongly suggests he’s being positioned as Jamie’s replacement in the story.
Jamie’s Yellowstone Replacement Has Consequences In Dutton Ranch
The way the show presents Joaquin Reyes as a mirror image of John Dutton and Jamie—sharing similar traits—hints that he’ll become Beth’s main rival in Yellowstone. Although they seem friendly now in Dallas, their relationship is likely to become strained as the Dutton Ranch and the 10-Petal company clash, each representing a major competitor in a tough business environment.
Joaquin’s character in the new series could create another conflict for Beth, forcing her to battle someone who brings back memories of her biggest enemy. This shows the new show is continuing to use familiar themes and elements from Yellowstone, including the lifestyle aspects that defined the original series, to maintain a similar feel.
Joaquin’s role as Beulah’s problem-solver could create trouble for Beth and Rip at Dutton Ranch. His conversation with Beth in Dallas suggests he’s assessing the competition and planning how to outmaneuver Dutton and Wheeler, who now own the Edwards Ranch that Beulah desired.
In the latest episode of Dutton Ranch, Dutton hints that the seemingly friendly rivalry between Joaquin and Beth hides something more intense. Meanwhile, the show introduces a new romance as Beulah’s granddaughter, Oreana (played by Natalie Alyn Lind), begins a coming-of-age story, further connecting the families’ histories.
The biggest danger to Beth and Rip is someone investigating what happened when Jamie Dutton disappeared. If they uncover evidence that Beth killed her brother, it could lead to the loss of the Dutton and Wheeler ranch. Joaquin seems to be the one most likely to find this information.
