Ever since Netflix revolutionized how we watch TV, most major tech and media companies have started their own streaming services. This competition has led to some winners, like Disney+ and the revamped HBO Max, some struggling services like Peacock and Paramount+, and outright failures, such as Quibi.
As a big streaming fan, I think Prime Video has really become Netflix’s biggest competitor. What’s amazing is you get so much more than just the shows – the free, super-fast shipping from Amazon is a huge perk, even if it’s a little scary for anyone who believes in a totally free market! But the shows themselves are fantastic. They’ve really become the go-to for solid, entertaining TV – think shows like Reacher and Jack Ryan. And it’s not just that! Invincible is seriously impressive – it’s a beautiful but brutal take on superheroes. Then there’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is just a really charming and feel-good show about a woman breaking barriers as a comedian back in the day.
For the last seven years, The Boys has been Amazon’s most important show. When it premiered in 2019, it was the first major success that really established Prime Video as a key streaming service – similar to how Stranger Things boosted Netflix and The Mandalorian did for Disney+. Throughout its run, many viewers kept their Prime subscriptions simply to find out if Billy Butcher would finally defeat Homelander.
After five seasons, The Boys has concluded (with Butcher successfully killing Homelander), leaving Prime Video without its biggest show. This marks a significant change for Prime, as they now need to find another hit series to attract and retain subscribers. The question now is: which show is poised to become the new face of Prime Video now that The Boys is finished?
What Will Be Amazon’s New Flagship Show After The Boys?
With Stranger Things coming to an end after the current season, Netflix has been searching for its next big hit. Wednesday has attracted a similar audience, KPop Demon Hunters could become a major franchise, and Greta Gerwig’s planned Narnia movies promise a fresh take on the classic books. However, it’s still unclear if any of these shows will be able to replace Stranger Things as a cultural phenomenon.
With the conclusion of The Boys‘ fifth and final season, Prime Video is in a similar situation to Netflix with Stranger Things. Simply creating spin-offs isn’t enough to fill the void left by a hit show. Amazon recently cancelled Gen V, but is heavily promoting Vought Rising, a prequel to The Boys focusing on the backstory of Soldier Boy and Stormfront – a story that’s already been explored in the original series. While spin-offs like Vought Rising and Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 might appeal to dedicated fans, they ultimately rely on the success of what came before.
As Amazon looks for its next big hit show, will it need to create something entirely new, or can an existing series rise to the occasion? Fallout proved its popularity with a strong second season, continuing the story towards New Vegas, making it a strong contender to become Prime Video’s defining show. Walton Goggins’ character, The Ghoul, has quickly become as recognizable and popular as Antony Starr’s Homelander.
Prime Video also has some promising new shows coming soon. The sci-fi series Blade Runner 2099 has the potential to be a huge hit for Amazon, and the God of War TV adaptation could become popular like The Last of Us did on HBO.
