I’ve been watching Dexter for years, and honestly, it’s fascinating how, even though he tries to reinvent himself – new name, new city, the whole nine yards – he just can’t shake those deeply ingrained patterns from way back in the early ’90s. Some things, it seems, never really change, no matter how hard you try.
Now that filming for season two of Dexter: Resurrection is well underway in New York City, writer and executive producer Scott Reynolds has shared some details about the production, including some of the sets and props being used. On April 24th, marking the tenth day of filming, Reynolds posted a picture on X of a donut box from The Donut Pub with the message, “While some things change… some things stay the same“.
Reynolds is talking about Dexter’s consistent habit throughout the series of sharing donuts with people he works with or lives near. This started in the original show when he was with the Miami Metro police and continued in Dexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan used this friendly gesture as a way to appear normal in public, hoping to make people like him and distract them from his secret life as a serial killer.
The story behind Dexter’s habit of sharing donuts was first shown in the Showtime series Dexter: Original Sin, which depicted the very first time he did it in 1991. Though the donut tradition appeared in Dexter, New Blood, and Original Sin, it wasn’t present in season one of Resurrection. This is likely because Dexter was preoccupied with more pressing matters and wasn’t prioritizing building relationships with non-killers during those episodes.
With Dexter adjusting to life in New York City, the return of the donut sharing from season 2 of Resurrection feels more fitting. While it’s still unconfirmed why the donuts appear, they could show up during Dexter’s drives for the rideshare service, be related to his new job, or even help his son, Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott), connect with people as he begins his career in law enforcement.
Considering the donut originated during Dexter’s time with Miami Metro, bringing it back within a police station setting makes sense. Season 2 will also feature a bigger role for the NYPD. Recently, Paramount announced Bokeem Woodbine will play Captain Mixon and Nona Parker Johnson will play his daughter, Officer Fiona Mixon, who will also become a love interest for Harrison.
We don’t yet know exactly how much time will pass after the end of Dexter: Resurrection season 1, but the new season is likely to take place closer to the present day. The first season was set shortly after the events of New Blood, which happened in 2022. This means Dexter and Harrison will be more established in their new lives in New York City, starting the season with a feeling of normalcy and a regular routine, similar to the original Dexter series.
Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection is adding Brian Cox, who will play The New York Ripper, and Dan Stevens as The Five Borough Killer. These two actors join the cast as dangerous new serial killers that Dexter and the police will be pursuing. Michael C. Hall, Jack Alcott, James Remar, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, and Uma Thurman will all be returning for the new season as Dexter, Harrison, Harry Morgan, Detective Wallace, Detective Oliva, and Charley Brown, respectively.
While Paramount+ hasn’t announced a premiere date for season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, the show’s creator, Clyde Phillips, has suggested it could arrive in October 2026.
