When The White Lotus premiered on HBO in 2021, it quickly became a surprising success. The show, a darkly funny murder mystery set at a fancy Hawaiian resort, captivated viewers with its awkward yet compelling characters, intriguing whodunit plot, and appealing vacation backdrop. People couldn’t get enough of it!
Originally planned as a limited series, The White Lotus became an anthology show thanks to the success of its first season. After receiving critical acclaim and numerous awards, creator Mike White and HBO decided to continue the series. Each season begins by briefly showing a flashforward of a dead body (or bodies), then goes back to the start of the week when a new group of guests arrive, and has consistently attracted more viewers than the last.
It’s not just The White Lotus that’s expanded from a limited series into a full show. HBO’s Big Little Lies started as a miniseries adapted from a single novel, but it’s now been renewed for a third season. While extending a limited series can be a gamble, it’s a worthwhile one if the original show is very popular – and that’s why Netflix decided to continue its critically acclaimed miniseries, Beef.
Ali Wong and Steven Yeun starred in the first season of Beef, a show about two strangers whose argument on the road quickly spirals into a major, ongoing conflict. The series was a critical hit, earning a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning several Emmy Awards in 2023, including Outstanding Limited Series and acting awards for both Wong and Yeun.
Given the first season’s popularity, it was natural to continue the show as an anthology series. Season 2 of Beef premiered on April 16, 2026, with a completely new story and cast. This season focuses on a feud between two couples who work at a country club: Josh (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay (Carey Mulligan) are successful millennials in management positions, while Austin (Charles Melton) and Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) are Gen Z employees with lower-level jobs.
As a big fan of quality TV, I was really excited for the second season of Beef, and it definitely delivered! While critics seemed to like the first season a little more (it has an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes), season two absolutely blew up on Netflix – it quickly became the most-watched show in the US. If it keeps this up, I think even The White Lotus might have some real competition for viewers!
Beef Season 2 Proves The Anthology Could Become Netflix’s Version Of The White Lotus
Netflix is widely considered the leading streaming service for miniseries. They’ve won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series four times in the last five years, with the only exception being, somewhat surprisingly, The White Lotus.
| Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series Primetime Emmy Award Winners | ||
|---|---|---|
| Year | Series | Streaming Platform |
| 2021 | The Queen’s Gambit | Netflix |
| 2022 | The White Lotus | HBO Max |
| 2023 | Beef | Netflix |
| 2024 | Baby Reindeer | Netflix |
| 2025 | Adolescence | Netflix |
Despite being the leading streaming service, Netflix doesn’t offer many anthology series. While Black Mirror is well-known, its often-bleak, science fiction themes keep it from reaching a truly mainstream audience, unlike The White Lotus, which became a widely discussed and highly popular show.
Okay, so I’ve been totally hooked on Beef, and I’m starting to think it’s going to blow up like The White Lotus did. It’s already doing really well on streaming, which is awesome, but it’s more than just numbers. Like Mike White’s show, Beef isn’t afraid to get dark with its humor and social commentary. Honestly, some of the things these characters do in season 2 are even more shocking than the wildest behavior you see at the White Lotus!
It’s disturbing to watch Jake, Lindsay, Austin, and Ashley make such questionable decisions, but it’s also strangely captivating. Their behavior is intentionally uncomfortable for viewers, much like the show The White Lotus.
Although The White Lotus shares a connected storyline and brings back some characters each season, the two seasons of Beef don’t appear to be linked. This gives Beef more freedom to explore different stories each season, as creator Lee Sung Jin doesn’t need to maintain a continuous narrative. The show’s premise – small disagreements spiraling out of control among wealthy people – offers endless potential for future seasons.
The success of The White Lotus is undeniable, and fans are already looking forward to its fourth season, slated for 2027. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a third season of Beef yet, it’s still a possibility. It’s hard to imagine a more compelling rivalry than the one between Beef and The White Lotus themselves!
