Great monologues bring characters to life, often starting important discussions and staying with audiences long after they end. They can be quiet and personal or powerful and inspiring. Here are ten of the most impactful monologues from the past few years.

While the story of *The Woman in Cabin 10* seemed promising enough for a movie adaptation, it might have worked better as a book. Directed by Simon Stone, the film presents a mystery that doesn’t quite build enough suspense. Journalist Lo Blacklock witnesses someone falling overboard during a cruise assignment given to her by Richard Bullmer, but when she reports it, no one believes her. Her insistence that she saw something leads to a series of frightening encounters and unexpected revelations. However, these events don’t add up to a truly shocking or unique thriller. Ultimately, the film feels like a predictable whodunit where the identity of the culprit is fairly obvious from the start.

In the upcoming film, Chris Pratt stars as Detective Chris Raven, who finds himself on trial before Judge Maddox, an artificial intelligence played by Rebecca Ferguson. Raven is accused of his wife’s murder and has just 90 minutes to convince the AI of his innocence, or face execution. Essentially, the AI acts as the judge, jury, and executioner. Using available technology, Raven must solve the mystery of his wife’s death and grapple with the ethical implications of the very justice system he helped create, all while racing against time.

I recently found a six-minute short film from 1967 called *The Big Shave* while browsing HBO Max. It wasn’t until the credits rolled that I realized Martin Scorsese directed this striking and surprisingly violent film, which offers a commentary on the social issues of the 1960s.

The movie begins in the fantastical kingdom of Abraxeon, where undead warriors known as Dreadites are brutally attacking Prince Halgan’s (Adam Brooks) knights. Just when it seems Halgan is about to be killed, a skilled swordsman appears and fights off the Dreadites, reaching out to help the injured prince. However, a ruthless mercenary named Deathstalker (Daniel Bernhardt) quickly steals Halgan’s jewelry and a mysterious amulet from his armor. He then abandons the prince and heads to Munkar’s Tavern for a drink.

Ever since the exciting trailer for the new *Frankenstein* film was released, anticipation has been building for this take on the classic story, directed by an Academy Award winner. Mia Goth, who plays Elizabeth Lavenza, recently discussed the director’s vision at the film’s Los Angeles premiere with Deadline. She explained that neither she nor the director intend the movie to be simply frightening. Instead, they see it as a complex story about family, and a project the director has been passionate about for many years.
