As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been amazed by this franchise – it really set a new standard for visual effects and spectacle. While not every film has been a masterpiece, you can’t argue with how much it’s influenced big-budget movies. The newest one, Jurassic World: Rebirth from 2025, definitely made a splash at the box office, but honestly, when it comes to truly great monster movies, there are plenty that are far more impressive.

Look, I’ll be honest, the recent Jurassic World movies just haven’t hit the same way the originals did, or even compared to a lot of other great monster movies out there. In fact, there are six creature features I could name that are way better than the latest Jurassic World installment – and they’re honestly some of the best the genre has ever seen.

The Fly Is A Terrifying Body Horror Masterpiece

David Cronenberg is a celebrated director, and many consider his 1986 film, The Fly, to be his masterpiece. Starring Jeff Goldblum, the movie tells the story of a scientist whose DNA unexpectedly combines with that of a fly. Jeff Goldblum gives a fantastic performance, and the special effects in The Fly are truly amazing. They make the film feel incredibly realistic and grounded, which is a huge part of what makes it so effective. Even today, The Fly remains the benchmark for scary, body-transforming horror, and it’s among the best creature features ever made.

It’s a really intense story about outsmarting a terrifying enemy and just trying to survive, and honestly, it’s no surprise it’s influenced so many sci-fi action movies since. For me, it’s a total masterpiece – one of the best ever.

Director Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is a landmark blockbuster and one of the most famous monster movies ever made. What sets it apart – and contributes to its lasting impact – is that the terrifying creature in the film, a shark, is a real animal. It’s often considered the best film in the Alien series and showcases the terrifying Xenomorphs at their most effective.

As a huge movie fan, I can tell you Aliens is just phenomenal. It’s packed with incredible, real-world effects that still blow me away, and the suspense never lets up. Plus, Ripley is a total icon! It’s a true masterpiece that holds up incredibly well, and honestly, I can watch it again and again without ever getting tired of it. It just works on every level as a perfect creature feature.

The Thing Is A Superb Sci-Fi Tale of Mistrust and Inexplicable Terror

Despite now being highly regarded, many of John Carpenter’s best films initially received poor reviews and weren’t popular with audiences. A prime example is his 1982 film, The Thing.

As a huge fan of sci-fi and creature features, I absolutely love The Thing. It follows a team of researchers in Antarctica who find themselves stalked by this incredible, shape-shifting alien – and the suspense is just relentless. Honestly, some of the most nail-biting scenes and acting performances ever are in this film. It’s baffling to me that it wasn’t a massive hit when it first came out, because it’s truly a landmark movie in the genre and still holds up brilliantly today.

Jurassic Park Will Never Be Topped By Any of Its Sequels

While now famous as the movie that launched a hugely successful franchise, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park isn’t just where it all began – it’s widely considered the best film in the series, and it remains that way comfortably.

With incredible action sequences, groundbreaking special effects, and memorable characters, the original Jurassic Park remains the best dinosaur adventure ever made. It’s a landmark film that’s hard to beat, and none of the sequels have quite captured its magic.
