Alex Kurtzman, a key producer for the Star Trek TV shows on Paramount+, recently shared news about the franchise’s future. He’s also the executive producer and co-showrunner of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and just finished directing the season two finale two weeks ago.
Now that filming for the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is finished, there aren’t any new Star Trek shows currently being made or approved for production. This marks the first time since 2016 – when Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout took over the Star Trek TV franchise – that this has happened. Kurtzman is currently celebrating the premiere of the season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which was screened with the cast and producers in Los Angeles.
Anthony Pascale from TrekMovie recently interviewed Alex Kurtzman, who shared some updates on the future of Star Trek on Paramount+. Kurtzman stated that discussions with Paramount Skydance about upcoming projects are still in the early stages, but that they’ve received consistent support. He also revealed that they’ve been talking about particular shows in more detail. You can find Kurtzman’s full statement below.
I’ve been talking with the people involved about what’s next for Star Trek, and they’ve been incredibly supportive. We’ve discussed potential new shows, but it’s still early days. I don’t have any concrete news to share right now, as these conversations are just beginning, but I can confirm that we are talking.
Alex Kurtzman recently told TrekMovie that his discussions about Star Trek have centered on both developing new series and continuing existing ones. He also explained that Paramount Skydance is currently undergoing significant changes following its acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery, which is causing delays across all projects, not just Star Trek. Kurtzman stated that Paramount Skydance’s leadership wants to carefully consider their future plans, including what’s next for the Star Trek franchise.
To be honest, it’s not just about what Skydance’s plans are for Star Trek TV. They also recently acquired Warner Brothers, which has created a huge number of organizational challenges. It’s overwhelming – like trying to drink from thousands of firehoses at once. This massive transition is causing everything to move more slowly, and it’s affecting all of their projects, not just Star Trek. However, they are working as quickly and carefully as possible, because they want to make well-considered decisions.
Alex Kurtzman’s current deal to oversee Star Trek on Paramount+ ends in 2026, but he’s strongly committed to the franchise’s continued success. He and fellow showrunner Noga Landau are working to get a third and potentially fourth season approved for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is designed to follow the four-year journey of the cadets as they train.
Regarding potential new Star Trek shows Alex Kurtzman is discussing with Paramount+, one known project in development is a live-action comedy series created by Tawny Newsome and Justin Semien. Newsome has mentioned that Paramount+ currently has the scripts and is deciding whether to proceed with the show.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting Star Trek: United ever since it was announced last August. This potential series would bring back Scott Bakula as President Jonathan Archer, and is being developed by a producer from Star Trek: Enterprise. However, despite continued fan interest since Star Trek: Picard ended in 2023, a continuation series called Star Trek: Legacy doesn’t seem to be moving forward at Paramount+.
Filming for the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished in December, and the episodes are now being edited and finalized. The show’s executive producer, Henry Alonso Myers, has revealed that he and Akiva Goldsman have proposed a spin-off series, Star Trek: Year One, focusing on Captain Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) and his initial year in command of the USS Enterprise. They are currently awaiting a response from Paramount+ regarding whether the series will be made.
The future of Star Trek is still uncertain, but fans have several new seasons to anticipate. After the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy concludes on Paramount+, there’s the 10-episode second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the 10-episode fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and a final 6-episode season five of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on the way.
