Many governments even began assisting people who wished to end their lives, as a way to cope with the overwhelming grief. While already dealing with incredibly difficult themes, the film Children of Men also features a stunning and memorable action sequence that stands out as its most powerful moment.
The Children of Men Ambush Scene Was Filmmaking at Its Finest
Theo’s deep sadness stemmed from a combination of personal loss and a global crisis. The world was facing widespread infertility, but Theo was also grieving the death of his son, which had occurred several years prior and ultimately led to the end of his relationship with Julian.
I always felt sorry for Theo, adrift until Julian reappeared, needing his help with something incredibly risky: getting a refugee out of the country. These weren’t just immigrants, though – they were people the government was actively targeting, rounding them up and putting them in camps. It’s a scary situation, and honestly, not that far-fetched. What really struck me was that Theo didn’t even ask why this was so urgent. It was clear he was just relieved to be working alongside his wife again, and that seemed to be enough for him.
Julian led the Fishes, a radical group dedicated to a single goal. She reached out to Theo, relying on his network to obtain documents for a refugee named Kee. While many others could have helped, Julian needed someone she completely trusted.
The reason for their complex relationship became apparent during a scene where Julian’s caravan was attacked. The entire scene was filmed inside a car in one continuous shot, and Julian and Theo playfully bantered about their past. Even though they were both grieving, it was clear they still cared for each other and felt a connection.
Theo and Julian playfully tried to make Kee laugh, but their fun was abruptly stopped. The camera then showed a burning barrier rushing towards Theo’s car, filmed through the windshield. The scene continued with a complete view of both the inside of the car and the chaos surrounding it.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Emmanuel Lubezki explained that he discovered a way to film an entire scene in a single take by suspending the camera from the car’s roof. He believed this technique would draw the audience into the story and avoid sensationalizing the violence depicted.
The scene was definitely violent. The tension peaked when Julian was shot and quickly died in the car. She was set to be one of the main characters in the movie Theo, and casting a well-known actress like Julianne Moore made viewers think she’d have a significant role throughout the film – a misleading impression, as it turned out.
She died swiftly, a moment that perfectly illustrated the film’s central idea. Theo, already overwhelmed with hopelessness, understood he couldn’t save the woman he loved. Despite trying to help her while they were traveling, it became clear she was beyond help. This wasn’t a failure of the story; it was exactly what the filmmakers intended. They believed violence was the source of the world’s problems and needed to be addressed. Showing the raw, chaotic nature of this single moment was the most effective way to convey that message.
Lubezki believes shooting everything live creates a strong sense of the characters’ desperation and confinement. He explained that after finding existing footage originally intended for other projects, his team quickly assembled something completely unique in just one week.
This scene from Children of Men became instantly famous and set a new standard for action sequences in film. Its impressive execution, particularly the beautiful camera work, raised the quality of many subsequent productions.

They believed the Human Project offered their only chance to permanently solve the problem of infertility. Julian’s worries were justified, as Kee’s death was later revealed to be no accident.
Okay, so the film really throws you for a loop when this radical group, the Fishes, takes out Kee’s protector. Suddenly, it’s not just about survival, but about control – they want Kee and her baby. And just like that, Theo, who’s been drifting through life, is thrust into this impossible situation. He’s not just looking after someone again, he’s become Kee’s only chance to reclaim her life and make her own choices about her child’s future. It’s a huge shift for both of them, and honestly, it’s incredibly gripping to watch.
For years, especially during difficult times, Theo struggled with alcoholism and a feeling of hopelessness. But when he realized he was the only one who could help Kee, he discovered a new sense of purpose – a mission with everything on the line.
In the film Children of Men, Theo was once a passionate activist, but personal tragedies left him feeling disillusioned. However, that caring side of him never truly disappeared, and his efforts to help Kee ultimately gave him a renewed sense of purpose. His final act in the film perfectly symbolized hope amidst despair, offering a vision of a brighter future even in the darkest of times.
