Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 5 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, titled “We Check In to C.C.’s Spa and Resort.” Leah Sava Jeffries discusses a key scene featuring her character, Annabeth, and the Sirens. This scene is based on a moment from the second book in the Percy Jackson series, The Sea of Monsters.
During a recent interview with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about the upcoming season of Percy Jackson, actress Alexandra Jeffries shared how the Sirens scene deeply affected her. She said she was almost brought to tears and genuinely frightened while filming it. Jeffries also discussed the significance of this encounter for her character, Annabeth, the difficulties of filming the scene, and her experience working with Andra Day. Her full comments are available below.
That scene really showed a big change for my character. It could be tricky to film because the scenes weren’t always shot in order. For example, one day I’d be filming a happy reunion with Grover after a long time apart, and the very next day I’d be acting like I was desperately searching for him. The scene with the Sirens was a good example of that.
Honestly, that was one of the most challenging days I’ve ever had on a film set. I’m not exaggerating! We were filming outdoors with a mix of real locations and a blue screen, and the weather was brutal. There was freezing cold water, and even when they added hot water, it barely helped – I was genuinely shivering. It wasn’t acting at that point, I was truly cold and shaking. Ms. Andra kept encouraging me, saying we were almost finished. It was a crazy experience, and I really hope BTS captured it because you guys wouldn’t believe it. The ‘Sirens’ were played by stunt performers who were great to talk to between takes, but when they started singing during the scene, it terrified me. I was genuinely scared and almost cried – I really felt like I was fearing for my life.
Going through that experience helped me grow as a person and allowed me to create the best possible version of this project for the audience. I truly hope they enjoy it.
The Percy Jackson series makes some changes to the Siren encounter. Instead of being separate challenges, getting past the Sirens is now closely connected to what happens to Annabeth and Percy while they’re on Circe’s (Rosemarie DeWitt) island. In the book, Circe and the Sirens are distinct dangers that Annabeth and Percy face at different points in their journey.
Annabeth thinks her mother, the goddess Athena, rescues her, but it’s actually the Sirens playing tricks on her. They show her a vision of her mother’s love and approval to draw her closer, when in reality, they’re the ones manipulating her.
Even with these changes, and despite the unexpected introduction of Day as Athena, the scene still focuses on Annabeth facing her pride and allowing herself to be vulnerable. This moment leads to a deeper understanding of herself and strengthens her connection with Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), who ultimately rescues her from the Sirens.
To truly capture the scene’s emotional weight, Jeffries fully committed to the role, enduring both extremely hot and cold water, and even experiencing real fear during the Siren’s song sequence. She was determined to deliver the most faithful adaptation possible, as this moment was a key part of Annabeth’s overall story.
This moment is important not just for Percy and Annabeth’s future, but also for showing how Annabeth’s relationship with her mother evolves, especially when they finally connect later in the series.
Season 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been confirmed and is currently being filmed, even before season 2 has premiered. It will cover the events of the third book, The Titan’s Curse, and will continue to explore Annabeth’s character, particularly her growth after the encounter with the Sirens and her challenging relationship with her mother, Athena.
