Caught Stealing: Austin Butler’s Crime Thriller Flops At Box Office But Thrives On Streaming

Despite a disappointing theatrical run last August, the crime thriller Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, is now a major hit with viewers around the world thanks to streaming.

As of today, December 8th, the movie Caught Stealing is the third most popular film on HBO Max worldwide. It’s behind The Conjuring: Last Rites at number one and The Family McMullen, but ahead of films like The Polar Express, Life, Until Dawn, Elf, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, The Phoenician Scheme, and On Swift Horses, which is in tenth place.

Even though you can’t find it on HBO Max in the US, Caught Stealing is now streaming on Netflix. It recently became one of the platform’s most popular titles, reaching number four in the US Top 10, after Jingle Bell Heist, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Dog.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Black Swan, and based on a novel by Charlie Huston, Caught Stealing features Austin Butler as a once-promising baseball player now working as a bartender. He unexpectedly gets drawn into New York City’s criminal world when he agrees to look after a neighbor’s pet.

The film boasts a stellar cast including Oscar nominee Austin Butler (known for Elvis), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Oscar winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), and Zoë Kravitz. Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bad Bunny, Griffin Dunne, Carol Kane, Action Bronson, George Abud, Nikita Kukushkin, Yuri Kolokolnikov, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Brill, Tenoch Huerta, and Laura Dern also star.

Critics generally liked the film Caught Stealing, praising it as a fun, old-fashioned movie that showcases Austin Butler’s talent. It’s also a surprisingly lighthearted turn for director Darren Aronofsky, earning an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Audiences loved the film, giving it an 83% rating. They described it as a fun, fast-paced adventure with a cool ’90s vibe, and praised the strong performances from Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz.

Despite a disappointing theatrical run – the film earned only $32.5 million worldwide with a production budget between $40 and $65 million – Caught Stealing has become popular on streaming platforms like HBO Max and Netflix, making it a film many are now recommending.
