Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Spartacus: House of Ashur episodes 1-2!Spartacus: House of Ashur star Tenika Davis has explained how she prepared for bloody fight scenes as the franchise’s first female gladiator. The cast of Spartacus: House of Ashurincludes some familiar returning faces, most notably Nick E. Tarabay as Ashur. One newcomer, however, is Davis’ Achillia, the franchise’s first female gladiator who fights under Ashur’s command.
In an interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, actress Davis talked about being the first female gladiator in the show Spartacus: House of Ashur, and throughout the entire Spartacus series. She described the fight scenes as challenging, but also collaborative, saying it felt like “finding our dance steps together.” Here’s what she had to say:
While ‘Spartacus’ has featured female warriors previously, this is the first time we’ve had a character actually competing as a gladiator. What was the most unexpected part of getting ready for those combat scenes?
Dancing was tough and exhausting, but I learned that having a supportive partner makes it easier to try new things and feel confident while learning.
It’s hard to explain, but fighting with Tarchon, for example, felt like discovering a shared rhythm. It took a while to get comfortable choreographing fights with each actor in the show. Once we did, though, it clicked, and it became really enjoyable. Even though the fight scenes were brutal and physically demanding, they also captured everything we love about the world of Spartacus – the intensity and beauty all mixed together.
Achillia is a key character in the Spartacus: House of Ashur story, as shown in the show’s first two episodes. After Ashur is resurrected with increased power under Crassus, he meets Achillia, who is enslaved by the Romans. Following a violent outburst where she kills several soldiers, Ashur decides to train her as a gladiator.
In the second episode, Achillia starts to face bullying from other gladiators, and is forced to fight back, even kill, to protect herself. She only gains their respect after defeating Korris in battle, which sets the stage for her future challenges. While these fights are difficult to film, according to Davis, they ultimately allow Achillia’s character to grow and become stronger.

You know, when she talked about her fight with Tarchon early in episode two, she described it like a dance, and honestly, that’s been true for all her fight scenes so far. Even the really rough, intense ones felt choreographed, like a brutal ballet. But looking back, that was just the beginning of everything she’d face.
Ashur intends to train Achillia to become a star gladiator, seeing her as a tool to increase his own influence. While working for him, Achillia has a chance to earn her freedom. However, her strong-willed and defiant personality makes her unpredictable and potentially dangerous to anyone who opposes her.
Now that “Spartacus: House of Ashur” has just started, the show has a lot of potential to delve deeper into Achillia’s role in the overall story. Having proven herself to her fellow gladiators, upcoming fight scenes will likely showcase her fighting abilities even more.
New episodes of Spartacus: House of Ashur air Fridays on Starz.
