Jessica Alba Addresses “Humiliating” Fantastic Four Scene 20 Years Later

Twenty years after the movie Fantastic Four came out, Jessica Alba has spoken about a scene she found embarrassing to film. She played Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, in both Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

A moment in the movie Fantastic Four that doesn’t hold up well today is when Sue Storm uses her invisibility power during a bridge rescue by completely removing her clothes to avoid being seen by the police. The scene shows her briefly in just her underwear and bra in front of a large crowd. This isn’t the only instance in the films where Sue is shown undressing while using her powers.

At the Red Sea Film Festival, Alba admitted the scene where her character was rescued from the bridge was the one she disliked filming the most in both Fantastic Four movies. Describing herself as a naturally modest person who comes from a conservative family, she explained how nervous she felt about the scene and how ultimately, it was a very unpleasant experience. You can hear more about it in her own words below.

I really disliked that experience; it was incredibly embarrassing. Coming from a fairly traditional family, I’m generally a private person, so I was really worried about that scene for weeks beforehand.

Even so, Alba truly enjoyed playing Sue and the impact the character had on female superheroes in the 2000s. Sue was a strong, independent woman who fought for herself and others, valued honesty, and didn’t rely on anyone to rescue her.

As a critic, I’ve seen a lot of characters, but this woman… she really stood out. She wasn’t just kind and nurturing – though she absolutely was – she had this incredible strength and wasn’t afraid to say what she thought. She always did the right thing, always. And what I loved most is that anyone could admire her. It’s easy to fall into tropes where female characters just need rescuing, becoming either the damsel or the villain’s motivation. That was so common for a long time. Thankfully, we’re seeing much more complex and empowered women on screen now, and she felt like a precursor to that shift.

You know, everyone’s been asking me about the new Fantastic Four movie, First Steps, with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm. I haven’t had a chance to see it yet, but it’s definitely on my list – I’m planning a family movie night to watch it with everyone soon!

I often watch movies with my kids, and my son is a huge fan of Sonic – he’d watch it over and over again! When it comes to family movie night, my kids definitely pick what we watch. Sometimes I have to persuade my son, though, because I really want to see certain movies too. I’m a big Marvel fan, and I just find those movies really enjoyable.

Although Alba’s main issue was with a particular bridge scene, she had other negative experiences while filming these movies. During Rise of the Silver Surfer, director Tim Story criticized her performance, saying it felt too authentic and emotionally raw. He then asked her to appear more conventionally attractive while crying, specifically telling her to “cry pretty.”

Despite stepping away for a time, Jessica Alba returned to acting and collaborated with Robert Rodriguez on several films. She recently revealed at the Red Sea Film Festival that they’re currently working on another movie together, featuring an all-Latino cast.

We’re developing a lively action film – think a heartwarming family story mixed with the excitement of a heist movie. We’re currently presenting it to studios and believe it will be a really enjoyable experience for audiences.

Alba is also working on a new film called A Tree is Blue, marking Dakota Johnson’s first time directing. Alba is part of the cast, alongside Charli XCX and Vanessa Burghardt, and has shared some hints about the story. She’s hoping the film will be shown at the Red Sea Film Festival next year.

The film follows a mother and daughter navigating the daughter’s desire for independence. We’re hoping to premiere it at the Red Sea Film Festival next year, once it’s completed.

After starring in the Fantastic Four films, Jessica Alba founded her own production company, Lady Metalmark Entertainment. She aims to use it to encourage more diversity in the entertainment industry and broaden representation on screen.
