Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey are starring in a new series called The Abandons, which is now available to watch on Netflix.
Gillian Anderson, known for The X-Files, and Lena Headey, famous for Game of Thrones, star in a Western set in the past. They play enemies battling over land, and their conflict comes to a dramatic head in the first season finale of Abandons. In a conversation with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, Anderson and Headey talked about the surprising ending of the episode and shared their hopes for their characters if the show continues with a second season.
“That’s a really important question,” Lena Headey joked, referring to the big fire in episode 7. She added with a smile, “I’m hoping to do more horseback riding and get into some more hand-to-hand combat in season 2.”
Anderson says he’d like to have access to more weapons in the game, and jokingly suggests a horse that actually moves would be a welcome addition.
Headey replies, “Ferocity unleashed, I reckon, in season 2.”
It’s currently unknown if Netflix will renew The Abandons for a second season. If it does happen, it won’t involve Kurt Sutter, the show’s original creator, as he left during the production of season 1 following disagreements with Netflix about the show’s direction.
The biggest disagreement reportedly involved the show’s initial, movie-length first episode, which Netflix asked to be split into two parts.
As a big movie and TV fan, I’ve been reading the reviews for this new series, and it’s all over the place! Some critics think the seven episodes are just the right length, but others say it feels like they tried to cram too much in and it ended up messy. Then there are those who feel like it just doesn’t ring true – like it’s not genuine or believable. It’s a pretty split reaction, honestly.
Most positive reviews highlight the strong performances of Anderson and Headey, as well as the show’s impressive visual style. Some reviewers have questioned whether the departure of Sutter negatively impacted the storyline.
Kurt Sutter first imagined The Abandons before Sons of Anarchy became popular, but he decided against making a Western after watching HBO’s Deadwood. He described feeling discouraged, comparing it to the story of Jethro Tull’s frontman switching instruments when he realized he couldn’t compete with a legendary guitarist.
According to Sutter, back in 2021, Ian Anderson was inspired to become a world-class flautist after seeing Eric Clapton play guitar. He reportedly decided he wanted to be the best rock flautist of all time, as he told people at the time (via Deadline).
The Abandons creator listed Bonanza and tales of the early mafia among his story influences.
Alongside Drew Anderson and Naomi Headey, The Abandons stars Nick Robinson, known for Melissa & Joey, Diana Silvers from Space Force, Aisling Franciosi of The Nightingale, Lucas Till (MacGyver), Lamar Johnson (The Next Step), and Natalia del Riego (Promised Land).
The Abandons dropped all seven episodes on Netflix on December 4.
