Power Rangers Is Officially Entering A New Era

Power Rangers is getting a fresh start with a new series! The team behind the popular show Percy Jackson and the Olympians – Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg – are now working as writers and showrunners on the upcoming reboot, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in March 2025. They’re clearly enthusiastic about bringing a new take on the Power Rangers story.

While walking the blue carpet at the season 2 premiere of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Jonathan Entwistle and Chris Steinberg revealed they’re developing a Power Rangers reboot for Disney+. They didn’t share many details about the show, including whether it would retell the story of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but hinted at a thrilling new adventure.

Shotz chuckled, saying he was being asked questions he couldn’t really answer. He confirmed they’re definitely hoping to develop that story further, but couldn’t share any details just yet.

Yes, the rumor is true! I can’t reveal the details of the story, but I’m incredibly excited about it.

The Power Rangers series recently concluded with Cosmic Fury on Netflix. This 10-episode season marked the 30th season overall and wrapped up the show’s long-running shared universe, bringing a close to characters that have been part of the franchise since 1993. Now, Hasbro is looking for fresh ideas and has partnered with Disney and new executive producers to move forward.

Attempts to revive the Power Rangers series have happened before. For example, the original creator, Haim Saban, funded the 2017 Power Rangers movie, which tried a grittier, more adult approach. However, the film wasn’t a box office success and received lukewarm reviews, leading to the cancellation of any plans for a connected movie series.

The comments from Shotz and Steinberg arrive as unfortunate news for the original Power Rangers series. Super Sentai, the Japanese show that provided the action footage for Power Rangers, is ending after its current season in October 2025. This probably means the upcoming reboot will need to create its own action sequences instead of using footage from Super Sentai.

We don’t know much about the upcoming reboot or its story yet, but creators Shotz and Steinberg have a strong background in fantasy action, thanks to their work on Percy Jackson. Even without specific details, they clearly care about the future of the series and how it will continue after the events of Super Sentai.

Right now, the team seems to be concentrating on getting season 2 of Percy Jackson ready for release, and they’re also actively filming season 3. Although this means a Power Rangers project is likely further down the line, they’ve hinted that they already have a vision for bringing the franchise back. We’ll get a clearer idea of their plans and the future direction of Power Rangers as things develop.
