Mika Amonsen, who plays Sean Reagan on the show Boston Blue, has been facing criticism from loyal Blue Bloods fans. He took over the role from Andrew Terraciano, who previously played Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg)’s son, and some viewers haven’t been happy about the change.
The actor recently told Us Weekly that while he’s received a lot of positive feedback, taking over the role hasn’t been easy. Some fans have expressed disappointment with the recasting of the character, wishing the original actor was still involved. However, he also sees a lot of support in the comments, with many people enjoying his take on the character. He noted, ‘There’s definitely been some negativity, but when I look closer, I see a lot of fans supporting the previous actor while also appreciating the version of the character that I’ve created.’
Amonsen acknowledged the criticism has been challenging, as he really wanted to satisfy fans of the original series. Still, he’s incredibly thankful to those who are enjoying his take on the character. “It’s great to see people really connecting with the show and liking the direction Sean’s story is going,” he said.
He recalled being nervous when he first took on the role. In an interview, he explained that he wanted to honor the previous actor’s portrayal of the character, while also making it his own. He even copied his predecessor’s hairstyle. “I was definitely very stressed at the beginning. I felt a responsibility to be respectful of the actor who played the role before me, and to do justice to Andrew’s performance,” he said. He added that he consciously made some visual choices, like keeping a similar hairstyle and mannerisms, to pay tribute to the original portrayal.
Amonsen described the casting and filming process as happening very fast. He made an effort to watch as much of the original series as possible, explaining that understanding the character’s development across the seasons was key to his portrayal in Boston Blue.
As a huge fan of the show, I really felt the pressure to get Sean right – both for the fans and to honor what Andrew, the original actor, brought to the role. When I landed the part, everything moved super fast – it was less than a week from the audition to starting work! I immediately started binge-watching, and honestly, focusing on the later seasons was the most helpful. I wanted to understand who Sean had become as an adult, and especially how his relationship with Danny had evolved. It was all about capturing that later-season Sean and making him feel authentic.
Sean appeared in all fourteen seasons of Blue Bloods, which ran from 2010 to 2024. He’s the son of Danny and Linda Reagan, characters played by Donnie Wahlberg and Amy Carlson. He also has a brother named Jack, played by Tony Terraciano.
You can watch new episodes of Boston Blue on CBS Fridays at 10 PM Eastern and 7 PM Pacific time. If you miss an episode, or want to watch older ones, all seasons are available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
