KPop Demon Hunters Directors Talk Live-Action Sequel Chances

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the directors of the popular animated film KPop Demon Hunters, recently discussed the possibility of a live-action sequel. The original KPop Demon Hunters, which premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025, was a huge success and became the streaming service’s most-watched animated movie.

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans think live-action KPop Demon Hunters 2 would be ‘quite hard’

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the directors of KPop Demon Hunters, recently discussed the possibility of a live-action sequel with Comic Book Resources.

During the discussion, Kang and Appelhans were asked about the possibility of an animated sequel. Kang responded that creating a live-action sequel to KPop Demon Hunters would be significantly more difficult.

I thought Appelhans made a really good point when he agreed with Kang. He explained that animation isn’t just about making things look real – it’s about taking life and boiling it down to its essence. You really try to exaggerate everything, whether it’s a character’s design or the core idea of a scene. He said that exaggeration actually helps create the perfect atmosphere for the show’s unique style.

Kang admitted the task was already very challenging, and he doubted he could handle anything more difficult. He said, “I think it’d be more difficult, and this was hard. So, I can’t even think about something harder than this.”

The duo also revealed that they don’t consider KPop Demon Hunters to be an anime.

I was so excited to hear Arden Cho, the voice of Rumi, talk about what she hopes for in a sequel! She mentioned in a Variety interview last August that she’d really love to see them find a way to rescue Jinu. She thinks, and I totally agree, that because the world is so magical, anything could happen! It sounds like the writers and directors intentionally left things open-ended, which is awesome because it means there are endless possibilities.
