There’s good news for fans of X-Men ’97: while Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed anything, they’re likely talking about making more seasons. This suggests the show could continue for quite a while beyond what’s currently planned.
X-Men ’97 Season 4 and 5 become highly likely
Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Studios’ TV, animation, and streaming divisions, recently told Collider at New York Comic Con that X-Men ’97 will likely continue beyond its third season, with discussions already underway for Seasons 4 and 5. This is the strongest hint yet that the show will be renewed.
The popular animated series is a direct sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1996). According to Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum, work on Season 3 is progressing well, with nearly completed storyboards available. Marvel has already ordered a third season and confirmed that Season 2 will arrive in summer 2026.
Shortly before the premiere of X-Men ’97 Season 1, the original showrunner, Beau DeMayo, was let go, causing significant changes to the production. Matthew Chauncey, a writer with experience on shows like Ms. Marvel and What If…?, took over as the new showrunner. According to voice actor Lenore Zann (who plays Rogue), the team had already finished most of Season 2 when this change happened, which thankfully helped maintain the show’s consistent style and storyline.
Alison Sealy-Smith (as Zann), AJ LoCasio (as Gambit), and Storm have shared their desire to make an animated X-Men movie. While Marvel hasn’t officially announced any animated plans, they are currently working on a live-action X-Men film with director Jake Schreier.
The new X-Men ’97 series debuted on Disney+ in March 2024, directed by Jake Castorena. It builds on Marvel’s animated world and has quickly become one of their biggest hits on streaming.
