Ryan Murphy, the creator of American Horror Story, has announced a large-scale crossover event—similar to the Avengers movies—will be a major part of the show’s upcoming thirteenth season.
The scary series first aired on FX in 2011, starring Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, and Jessica Lange. Because it’s an anthology, each season tells a completely new story in a different location, though many of the actors return. The show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, often references previous seasons, and he plans to do so again next year.
The witches from Coven will be back for season 13 of American Horror Story. However, Ryan Murphy recently told ET that the new season isn’t just a Coven revival – it’s something more.
Instead, it’s a story that spans different time periods,” meaning familiar actors like Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, and Billie Lourd will be portraying various characters from previous seasons.
Okay, so Ryan Murphy just dropped a major hint about season 13 of American Horror Story, and it sounds absolutely wild. He’s basically saying it’s going to be an all-star team-up, like The Avengers, with characters from past seasons uniting to take down one seriously terrifying villain. Honestly, I’m already hooked – a true crossover event is exactly what this show needed!
The show’s creator says that while some actors had previously declined to reprise their roles on American Horror Story, they were so impressed with his idea for season 13 that they agreed to come back this time.
Murphy explained that the upcoming season will consist of 13 episodes – a nod to the show’s title. He and his co-writers, Brad Falchuk, Ned Martel, and Charlie Carver, spent years crafting the scripts, with Murphy emphasizing he wanted this particular season to be unique.
People keep saying this season will focus on witches, but that’s not quite right – it incorporates elements from all past seasons of the show. That means Sarah Paulson is playing six or seven different characters, Jessica Lange is reprising all four of her most famous roles, and Evan Peters is taking on five! Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, and Billie Lourd are also returning. It’s like an ‘Avengers’-style event where everyone joins forces to fight a major villain, which makes it really exciting. Surprisingly, many of these actors had previously turned down the idea of coming back, but once I explained this concept, they all agreed! Jessica Lange even said she had to be involved. We’re bringing together almost everyone from throughout the series for one big season. And because the season is titled ’13,’ it will have 13 episodes. It took years and months of writing to make this happen; I really wanted to do ‘13’ in a unique way, and I think we’ve achieved something special.
Given that American Horror Story is a horror show and the number 13 is often seen as unlucky, it’s logical that creator Ryan Murphy wants to revisit past characters with the original actors, bringing the series back to its roots. However, how this will actually play out in the story remains a mystery, as Murphy hasn’t revealed any plot details yet.
Following her role as Billie Dean Howard in the first season of American Horror Story, Murder House, Sarah Paulson took on a variety of memorable characters, including Lana Winters, Cordelia Goode, the twins Bette and Dot Tattler, Sally McKenna, Audrey Tindall, Ally Mayfair-Richards, Ms. Wilhemina Venable, Tuberculosis Karen, and even Mamie Eisenhower.
I’ve been watching Evan Peters in American Horror Story for years, and he’s played so many unforgettable characters! Some of my favorites include Tate Langdon, Kit Walker, Kyle Spencer, Jimmy Darling, James Patrick March, Rory Monahan, Kai Anderson, Malcolm Gallant, Jeff Pfister, and Austin Sommers – he really transforms himself with every role.
According to Murphy, Paulson is set to portray six or seven different characters, and Evans will reprise five. Given that both actors have played even more roles in previous seasons, viewers can anticipate seeing other familiar faces from the show – beyond the witches already confirmed from Coven.
Jessica Lange has famously played four different characters in Ryan Murphy’s series: Constance Langdon, Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode, and Elsa Mars. Murphy recently confirmed that Lange will return to play all of these roles again.
As a huge horror fan, I’m already getting excited for the next season of American Horror Story! It’s only about two months away, and I’m expecting we’ll get a trailer soon. Ryan Murphy has hinted at a big crossover event, kind of like the Avengers of horror, and I can’t wait to see what he has planned for this fall.
Returning cast members include Angela Bassett, Leslie Grossman, Gabourey Sidibe, John Carroll Lynch, Matt Fraser, and Frances Conroy. Joining them this season are new faces like John Waters, Joey Pollari, Alex Consani, Paul Anthony Kelly, Madelaine Petsch, Mena Suvari, Berto Colón, Avantika, Grace Dumdaw, Cara Delevingne, and Charlie Carver.
American Horror Story season 13 premieres Thursday, September 24 at 9 p.m. EDT on FX and Hulu.
