Following encouraging news from the film’s actors, Dan Harmon is sharing an update about the Community movie.
Bringing back his beloved show hasn’t been easy for creator Dan Harmon over the last few years. He started writing the script in late 2022 with longtime collaborator Andrew Guest, and most of the original cast was set to return, though Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover weren’t initially confirmed. While they eventually signed on, the filming of the Community movie was significantly delayed in 2023 due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes.
During a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns about the upcoming season of Rick and Morty, creator Dan Harmon discussed Donald Glover’s positive update on the Community movie. While Harmon confirmed the movie is still being developed, he also warned that coordinating schedules and getting everything lined up remains a challenge, referencing the difficulties they’ve faced with the project in the past.
Despite the delays, he’s still optimistic about the Community movie. He jokingly said he wouldn’t disagree with Donald Glover’s involvement and is determined to keep him in the film. He also admitted the team is worried about disappointing fans after making them wait 15 years for the promised “six seasons and a movie”.
I really don’t want to disappoint the fans of Community, especially after they’ve already been through so much over the past 15 years. It’s a tough situation. But we’re still working on it, no matter what challenges we face, and we’re trying to make it happen. I probably shouldn’t have talked about it that way, though. [laughs]
Production on the long-awaited Community movie has been slow to start, largely due to the cast’s busy schedules. The initial delays caused by the writers’ and actors’ strikes compounded the issue. Donald Glover is juggling a music tour and the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series, while Joel McHale stars in Fox’s Animal Control. Danny Pudi is co-leading Going Dutch on Fox, and Allison Brie is working on projects like Together and the Masters of the Universe reboot.
The guest confirmed the scheduling conflict was a major problem in February, explaining that one actor’s early project start caused it. He didn’t reveal the actor’s name, wanting to avoid fan backlash. He also agreed with Harmon, stating the creative team is worried about disappointing longtime viewers by rushing production.
Despite recent enthusiastic comments from Harmon and Glover about the Community movie, getting everyone’s schedules to align is still proving difficult. Glover is now confirmed to return to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, not only as an actor but also to direct several episodes. Adding to the challenge, Fox has greenlit season 5 of Animal Control, which will keep Joel McHale busy.
Another major concern for the Community movie is Peacock’s plan for it. The streaming service won the rights to the film after a competition, but has since been considering changes to the budget. With Peacock already investing in a lot of new shows and movies – including the Fast & Furious spin-off series and multiple Ted installments – Harmon and the team might face more than just scheduling difficulties getting the movie made.
