Netflix’s latest mystery show is already proving popular. The science fiction series has earned positive feedback from reviewers and viewers alike, and boasts a cast of well-known actors.
The new show, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, premiered on Netflix on May 21st. It quickly became a popular streaming success, earning positive reviews, according to FlixPatrol.
The new show The Boroughs started strong in the U.S., coming in second place right after the popular series Nemesis. While it’s currently fifth in the global Top 10, viewers outside the U.S. haven’t fully discovered it yet. Although it hasn’t reached the top spot overall, The Boroughs did climb to third place in Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Canada.
What Happens in The Boroughs?
As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve been hearing a lot about this new series, and it’s giving me serious Stranger Things vibes – it’s got that same seemingly idyllic small-town feel. It’s called The Boroughs, and it’s set in a beautiful retirement community out in the New Mexico desert. The story follows a man who’s recently lost his wife and moves there, only to uncover a really unsettling secret. It sounds like a compelling mix of grief and mystery!
After his wife’s death, Sam Cooper moves to The Boroughs hoping for a fresh start, but the perfect neighborhood quickly feels isolating. His life takes a dark turn when he witnesses something terrifying one night, realizing a monster is lurking within the seemingly peaceful streets. When he tries to warn others, he finds himself allied with a group of unlikely and eccentric neighbors.
Sam finds himself surrounded by fascinating neighbors: a clever ex-reporter, someone searching for meaning, a jaded music manager, and a gifted doctor facing a difficult situation. Though people tend to dismiss them, this unexpected group must work together to uncover a dangerous secret hidden within their community before it’s too late.
Alfred Molina, known for his role in Spider-Man, stars as Sam, alongside Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Geena Davis, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. In an interview with Tudum, Molina shared that the cast members, all experienced actors, approached the project with a relaxed and professional attitude. He explained that at a certain point in their careers, they’ve learned to focus on the work without taking themselves too seriously, which created a comfortable and easygoing environment on set.
The creators of Stranger Things, known as the Duffer Brothers, have pointed out the overlap between their new project and their popular Netflix series. They say that while the main characters in The Boroughs are a bit older than the kids in Stranger Things, they’re excited for audiences to experience a story that’s both thrilling, humorous, and emotionally resonant.
The Boroughs Received Fantastic Reviews
The eight-episode series was released all at once. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating, with 94% approval based on 36 reviews. While some found it similar to other popular shows, reviewers also highlighted that the sci-fi and supernatural elements helped it stand out.
Viewers really liked the show, giving it an 84% approval rating early on. Many compared it to classic films by Spielberg, while others said it felt similar to Stranger Things. A lot of praise also went to the strong performances from the well-known actors.
The Boroughs is streaming on Netflix.
