The Greatest Studio Ghibli Films Officially Return to the Big Screen in New U.S. Release

The annual GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment Fest regularly revives beloved anime classics in U.S. cinemas. They’ve just announced that seven Studio Ghibli films will be back on the big screen in 2026.

Studio Ghibli Fest 2026 will feature a selection of beloved films, including Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Tales From Earthsea, Only Yesterday, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Five of these films were written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the Academy Award-winning co-founder of Studio Ghibli.

Like previous years, Ghibli Fest 2026 will show both dubbed and subtitled versions of each film at select theaters across the U.S. for a limited time. You can find a full schedule of screening dates and times below, listed in local time.

Ghibli Fest 2026 is highlighting films celebrating significant anniversaries, including one – T – which is marking its 20th year and will be shown in theaters as part of the festival for the first time.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Studio Ghibli’s first film, Castle in the Sky. Originally released in 1986, the anime takes inspiration from Jonathan Swift’s famous novel, Gulliver’s Travels.

This year’s Ghibli Fest will celebrate the work of Isao Takahata, the brilliant director who collaborated with Hayao Miyazaki on many beloved Ghibli films, such as Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. The festival will also mark the 35th anniversary of his touching 1991 film, Only Yesterday.

In 2002, this film was groundbreaking, earning the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for an anime movie. It also became a huge commercial success, grossing over $373.8 million worldwide.

Ghibli Fest 2026 is a second chance for fans who didn’t get to see Princess Mononoke in 4K when it was first restored. Studio Ghibli began its 40th-anniversary celebration in March 2025 by giving the classic dark fantasy film a beautiful 4K makeover.

This new version was created with the guidance of Atsushi Okui, a highly experienced cinematographer known for his work with Studio Ghibli.
