Why Amazon’s New R-Rated Spider-Man Series Won’t Feature Peter Parker

Don’t expect to see Peter Parker in Prime Video’s upcoming Spider-Man series.

Although not a direct spin-off, Spider-Noir began with the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Nicolas Cage plays Spider-Noir in both, but they portray different versions of the character. Spider-Noir focuses on Ben Reilly, while Spider-Verse features a different take on Peter Parker. This choice allowed the show’s creators, Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, to develop the character without being limited by viewers’ expectations of Peter Parker.

Uziel told Entertainment Weekly that Peter Parker often represents youth and growing up. He sees the Ben Reilly character as a way to tell a story that’s different from the typical Peter Parker narrative. The series, according to the writer, blends different genres together. As he explained, it’s not simply a noir or a superhero show, but a combination of both.

Uziel explained that the show aimed to capture the feel of classic Humphrey Bogart films, but with Spider-Man in the lead role. He and actor Nicolas Cage would frequently discuss specific noir films before shooting scenes, with Cage especially eager to draw inspiration from the genre. As Uziel put it, “That’s why he’s Nic Cage.”

Phil Lord, a producer on Spider-Noir, explained that they decided to make the main character Ben instead of Peter to better fit the show’s dark, film-noir style. According to Lord, this version of Spider-Man is quite different from the one audiences know from the movies—he’s older, more cynical, and willing to resort to violence, even when intoxicated.

Lord hinted that the character’s name change from Spider-Noir to Ben Reilly is more than just a stylistic choice. He explained that the reason for the name change will be revealed later in the series, and that Ben Reilly’s identity is connected to the central mystery. Considering Ben Reilly’s background in the comics, this suggests that Peter Parker might still exist within this version of the Spider-Man story.

All eight episodes of Spider-Noir debut on May 27, 2026, on Prime Video.
