Netflix’s New 8-Part Crime Series Is Officially 1 of the Most-Watched Shows in the World

As a total movie and TV buff, I’ve noticed Netflix is really stepping up its game when it comes to crime dramas. Each month brings a ton of new options, both shows they’ve made themselves and ones they’ve licensed. And their newest obsession? It’s definitely…

Crime series are often captivating because they’re easy to watch all at once, hold your attention, and usually deliver a satisfying conclusion when the mystery is solved. That’s why the new eight-episode series, Nemesis, quickly gained popularity. According to FlixPatrol, just days after its release on May 14th, it’s become one of the most-watched shows globally.

Okay, so this new crime drama is doing really well. It’s currently number two worldwide, right after that show everyone’s been talking about with its second season. But get this – Nemesis hit number one in thirteen different countries on its very first day, and somehow managed to stay at number one in all those places the next day too! Here in the US, it started out at number three on May 15th, but quickly jumped to number two, and held that spot on May 17th as well. Pretty impressive, right?

What Happens in Nemesis?

Nemesis tells the story of two men – a skilled criminal and a brilliant detective – who are on opposing sides of the law. Initially presented as a thrilling heist story with high stakes, family drama, and intense action, the narrative evolves into a deeper exploration of human motivation, what keeps us going, and what ultimately leads to our downfall.

When Detective Isaiah Stiles’ partner is murdered during a case, he’s driven to uncover the truth and quickly suspects businessman Coltrane Wilder.

Courtney A. Kemp, the creator of “Power,” has teamed up with Tani Marole to create a new series called “Nemesis.” This project marks Kemp’s first collaboration with Netflix. According to Kemp, she and Marole are thrilled to bring a gripping psychological crime drama to the platform, exploring universal themes of morality, love, loss, and the conflict between loyalty and self-interest, all set in a specific location.

The new series Nemesis stars Matthew Law as Detective Isaiah Stiles and Y’lan Noel as Coltrane Wilder, a skilled heist planner. According to co-creator Tani Marole, these two characters are fundamentally alike despite appearing different. The supporting cast includes Gabrielle Dennis as Dr. Candace Stiles, Cleopatra Coleman as Ebony Wilder, Cedric Joe as Noah Stiles, Moe Irvin as Amos “Nightmare” Stiles, Ariana Guerra as Yvette Cruz, Stephanie Sigman as Nicolette Harper, and Domenick Lombardozzi, Michael Potts, Jeff Pierre, Jay Reeves, Siua Ikale’o, Sophina Brown, Tre Hale, and Quincy Isaiah.

Nemesis Is a Hit With Critics

I’m so excited about Nemesis! It launched with amazing reviews, and right now, 90% of critics love it based on the first 10 reviews. Of course, that number could shift as more reviews come in, but as of now, nine out of ten critics are giving it a thumbs up. They’re saying it’s really entertaining and the acting is fantastic, even if it does hit some familiar tropes.

The film received one negative review, from Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies, who described it as a retread of Heat with added melodrama, comparing it to a reheated snack with excessive drama.

Initial audience responses were largely negative. With fewer than 50 ratings, the feature received a score of only 41%, with many commenting that the acting was poor and the story felt unoriginal and didn’t offer anything fresh.

The book also received positive feedback, including one five-star review that compared it to a thrilling mix of Power, How to Get Away With Murder, and The Blacklist.

Nemesis is streaming on Netflix.
