The final episode of the Prime Video series is almost here, bringing a seven-year story to a close. Unfortunately, the show has also reached a low point recently, leaving viewers concerned that the ending might not be satisfying.
Just before the season finale, the second-to-last episode of The Boys, titled “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk,” received the lowest IMDb rating of any episode so far – currently 6.6 out of 10. This is the first time an episode of the show has ever scored below 7.0 on the site.
Will The Boys Ultimately Stick the Landing?
The recent dip in positive reactions might be because viewers expected a lot from this episode, as it’s building towards the story’s ending. It wasn’t a particularly action-packed installment, which might have been okay if the show wasn’t nearing its conclusion. Reports suggest this episode was deliberately paced more slowly to allow for a more impactful finale. If true, fans who were disappointed with this episode might find the series finale much more satisfying.
So, the show’s breaking records, which is awesome, but honestly, it’s got me a little worried. A lot of fans are starting to compare this to the Game of Thrones finale – you know, how everyone loved it for years, then completely turned on it after the last few episodes? Apparently, the showrunner, Eric Kripke, was totally aware of that risk! He’s said how Game of Thrones had such a perfect run until the end, and then people started re-evaluating the whole series negatively. He really wanted to avoid that happening with The Boys, so he put a ton of effort into making sure the ending landed well.
Eric Kripke Hopes to Avoid Pulling a Game of Thrones
Kripke admitted he was incredibly scared when dealing with the show’s reception, telling The River he wasn’t confident at all. He explained that people often judge entire series based on how they end, which is something he’s noticed while rewatching Game of Thrones with his son. Despite being a technically brilliant and creatively significant show for eight seasons, its final three episodes were flawed, leading to a dismissive attitude towards the entire series. Kripke finds this frustrating, arguing that Game of Thrones was a world-changing show that was incredibly difficult to produce.
Critics have overwhelmingly praised Season 5. Currently, it has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best-reviewed seasons of the show. Only Season 3, with a 98% score, has performed slightly better. This rating could change a little after the final episode airs, depending on how viewers and critics react to it.
