Glamorous ’80s Cop Show Returns as a PVOD Streaming Hit Ahead of Michael B. Jordan’s Reboot

The original film and TV show are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Universal is currently working on a reboot of the movie, and the ’80s series is once again charting well on demand.

As of May 14th, Miami Vice is currently the most popular show on the Apple TV Store, moving up one position from yesterday, according to FlixPatrol. Miami Vice Was True to Its Decade

Created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, Miami Vice was a popular television series that ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989. The show followed detectives James “Sonny” Crockett, played by Don Johnson, and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, played by Philip Michael Thomas, as they worked undercover to solve crimes in Miami, Florida.

Michael B. Jordan Is Starring in the New Miami Vice Movie

I’m so excited about the new Miami Vice movie that’s been in development since April 2025! Joseph Kosinski is directing, and it’s going to star Michael B. The script is by Dan Gilroy, building on some earlier work by Eric Warren Singer, and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

As described in its summary, Miami Vice ’85 will delve into the flashy and seedy underbelly of 1980s Miami. The show draws inspiration from the original Miami Vice series, specifically its iconic pilot and first season, which had a major impact on popular culture and trends in fashion and film.

Following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, Joseph Kosinski has become a leading director in Hollywood. His next film, F1, set to release in 2025, was highly sought after, with Warner Bros. and Apple ultimately winning a competitive bidding process against other major studios and streaming services.

Although Paul Verhoeven was originally planning a UFO-themed conspiracy thriller as his next film after F1, he will now direct Miami Vice ’85 instead. Filming is expected to begin later in 2024, with the movie scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.

Michael B. Jordan is set to direct Miami Vice ’85. He’ll also direct The Thomas Crown Affair, marking his first time directing since Creed III (2023). Amazon MGM Studios plans to release The Thomas Crown Affair on March 5, 2027.
