The introduction of the Absolute Robins has been a major highlight of the story, though some fans feel like the team isn’t quite complete. However, it looks like a familiar face might be joining them soon.
Scott Snyder has revealed he has a concept for bringing Damian Wayne into the story of Absolute Batman.
So, I was watching ComicPop Returns the other day, and the writer was on talking about bringing different Robins into his universe. We talked about whether the main timeline’s Robin might show up, and he explained again why Damian wasn’t in Absolute Batman – he’s talked about it before. Then, he hinted that Damian will eventually make an appearance, which is awesome! I’m really excited to see how that plays out.
It looks like fans of Absolute Batman can anticipate seeing more of Damian Wayne around next year. The big question now is how that will happen.
In an interview for ComicPop Returns, Scott Snyder explained that Damian Wayne, created by Grant Morrison and appearing in 2006, is Bruce Wayne’s biological son – the result of a relationship with Talia al Ghul. Talia hasn’t yet appeared in the Absolute Universe storyline. Since this version of Bruce Wayne is a 25-year-old who mostly stays in Gotham, Snyder feels it wouldn’t make sense to force Damian into the team of Absolute Robins.
The Absolute Robins are, for all intents and purposes, raised as the adopted children of Jack Grimm IV, also known as Absolute Joker. He’s a wealthy and eccentric figure with a lavish mansion and a high-tech underground lair, mirroring Bruce Wayne but with a much darker edge. Considering this, it makes sense that Absolute Damian would be presented as the offspring of an immortal demon, or perhaps even the biological son of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle (Catwoman).
What About Absolute Carrie Kelley In The Absolute Universe?
I was really interested to hear Scott Snyder talk about which Bat-Family members might be tough to bring into the Absolute Universe, and he mentioned Carrie Kelley! It’s cool to think about, because she was the first female Robin, introduced way back in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. It’s wild how many different versions of her we’ve seen in the main DC timeline since then, so figuring out how to do her justice in this new universe must be tricky.
I’m really wondering why Snyder hasn’t thought about doing a new ‘Absolute Batman’ book. His main reason for how he’s handling ‘ComicPop Returns’ seems to be that he wants to keep the ‘Absolute’ versions limited to Robins who were the classic red, green, and yellow in the main DC universe. That means his older take, ‘The Dark Knight Returns,’ doesn’t really fit into that plan.
Honestly, I’d be really intrigued to see Carrie Kelley, the young vigilante, team up with the Absolute Joker. But more than that, I really hope this version of Carrie – Absolute Carrie – gets a bigger role in the comics than she’s had before. It’s kinda sad that in other timelines, she’s just been stuck as Damian’s acting teacher or just some random person watching Bruce Wayne… well, you know. She deserves more than that!
In the end, Snyder selected Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Duke Thomas as the core members of the Absolute Robins. This group of young heroes from Gotham, known as the Robin Program, is trained and led by Slade Wilson (Deathstroke) and funded by Jack Grimm. They use advanced mech suits to help them track down Batman, who is currently Gotham’s most wanted criminal. Batman has been falsely accused of killing former mayor James Gordon by the villain Absolute Scarecrow, as revealed in Absolute Batman #19.
Absolute Batman #20 is now available in comic book stores.
