Crime thrillers are incredibly popular and often very captivating TV shows. Several recent series, including His & Hers, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, and Unchosen, have gained a lot of attention. If you’ve enjoyed the major crime thrillers on Netflix, there’s a fantastic 5-episode Nordic noir series that’s perfect for a weekend of watching.
Premiering on Netflix in 2025, The Åre Murders (originally titled Åremorden) is a 5-episode series starring Carla Sehn and Kardo Razzazi as Hanna Ahlander and Daniel Lindskog. Based on the murder-mystery novels by Viveca Sten, this series offers a compelling blend of drama, mystery, and surprising twists, making it a perfect binge-watch for fans of Nordic noir – a genre often underappreciated on the platform.
The Åre Murders Is a Grim Yet Cozy Murder Mystery Series
The series The Åre Murders centers around Hanna, a police officer who transfers from Stockholm to the small Swedish town of Åre. Åre is a popular ski resort and tourist destination in Scandinavia, with a population of under 4,000 as of 2018, creating a close-knit, intimate atmosphere reminiscent of classic British crime shows.
I’m really hooked on this new series! It starts with Hanna arriving in Åre, staying at her sister’s place while she’s away. She’s taken a break from her job with the Stockholm police, but we don’t know why yet, and that’s a big part of the mystery. The whole season follows her as she tries to settle into life in this small town and get to know everyone.
The same night Hanna arrives in Åre, a teenage girl named Amanda disappears after leaving a party. Amanda is well-known in the area, and despite being on vacation, Hanna immediately joins the search and offers help to the local police.
Hanna needs to gain the trust of the local detectives, like Detective Daniel Lindskog. Her unexplained departure from the Stockholm Police Department creates tension, but Hanna is determined to prove her skills and show everyone – including her new colleagues – that she’s a capable detective.
“The Åre Murders” is a compelling mystery that focuses on both the investigation of a crime and the lives of the people in a small town where everyone has secrets – including the detective, Hanna. The show expertly mixes character development with the unfolding case in quick, engaging episodes.
The Åre Murders Is Based on a Book Series
The TV series The Åre Murders is based on the books by Swedish author and lawyer Viveca Sten. While Sten is famous for her Sandhamn Murders series, this show is adapted from her other popular mystery series, The Åre Murders.
The series began with Hidden in Snow, released in 2020, and it currently has a rating of 4.03 on Goodreads. This book forms the foundation of the first story arc in the Netflix series, focusing on Hanna’s arrival in Åre and her search for Amanda. The second book, Hidden in Shadows, came out in 2021.
I just finished watching the second case in Season 1 of The Åre Murders, and it’s based on the book Hidden in Shadows, which has a pretty good rating of 4.16 on Goodreads. This installment centers around the murder of Johan Andersson, a former Olympic skier. Thankfully, both this case and the one from the first episode get wrapped up by the end of the series, though the book series itself is still ongoing, so there’s more to come!
Two more books are planned for the Åre Murders series: Hidden in Memories, coming out in 2025, and Hidden in Lies, scheduled for 2026. This gives the TV adaptation of Viveca Sten’s novels plenty of material to work with, and it could potentially become a long-running, popular mystery series like the British classics Poirot and Vera.
Shows originating from Scandinavian countries frequently achieve global popularity. However, plenty of excellent international crime dramas and book adaptations exist beyond those big hits, and often go unnoticed. The Åre Murders is a prime example of a fantastic show that deserves more attention. Good news – it’s already been renewed for a second season!
Filming for Season 2 started in February 2026, and while a release date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s expected to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027. If you enjoy atmospheric, dark murder mysteries, you can currently watch The Åre Murders on Netflix.
