Good news for Mortal Kombat fans! We now know who will be resurrected in Mortal Kombat III.
As a huge cinema fan, I found it fascinating to hear screenwriter Jeremy Slater talk about the shocking deaths in Mortal Kombat II, and what they could mean for the future of the series. He revealed something really interesting about Cole Young, the main character Lewis Tan played who was created just for the first film. Apparently, Slater actually pitched the idea of killing him off way back during the initial brainstorming sessions, even before he was officially writing the script! He jokingly said it was ‘someone else’s problem’ at that point, which I thought was a pretty candid admission.
Which Fan-Favorites Died in Mortal Kombat II — And Who Is Coming Back?
It’s difficult because I’m a big fan of Lewis Tan – he’s a great actor, a wonderful person, and incredibly skilled in martial arts. Apparently, the studio insisted on his character being in the first movie, wanting someone for the audience to identify with. But a lot of fans don’t feel like his character, Cole Young, fits into the story.
I was really surprised by some of the choices in the latest movie! While it seems like we might not see Cole Young again, the actor who played him, Lewis Tan, could definitely return in a different role. And honestly, even though seeing Liu Kang die was a shock, I get the feeling it’s all leading up to something huge from the games – a really iconic storyline, actually. It’s a bold move, but I’m excited to see where it goes!
Most casual viewers won’t be shocked by Liu Kang’s death, but dedicated fans will be devastated. That’s because, in the game’s story, Liu Kang is the hero who defeats Shao Kahn. The filmmakers always intended to kill off the character, but Ludi Lin’s performance was so strong that they slightly changed how he died, making it a more deliberate sacrifice.
The writer hinted that the fate of the character is unclear – did he die, or was it something else entirely? The exact details of what happened to him will be revealed in Mortal Kombat III.
Why Mortal Kombat II is Such a Hit with Audiences
The film Mortal Kombat II introduces several popular characters who didn’t appear in the first movie. New cast members include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.
Josh Lawson reprised his role as Kano in Mortal Kombat II, a return that producer E. Bennett Walsh strongly advocated for. Though reviews from critics have been mixed but mostly positive, audiences have generally enjoyed this new, action-packed installment in the Mortal Kombat saga.
Currently, Rotten Tomatoes shows the film has received positive reviews from critics, averaging over 150 reviews. Viewers also seem to enjoy it, giving it an 89% rating based on more than 2,500 reviews.
Mortal Kombat II is in theaters now.
