Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney is causing major online discourse.
After a four-year break, the third and final season of Sam Levinson’s often-discussed series, Euphoria, is back – and it’s already attracting negative attention. The HBO show boasts a talented cast including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Alexa Demie, but recent headlines have focused on Sweeney for reasons that aren’t positive.
In the third season of the show, Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, considers different ways to make money, including creating content on OnlyFans. This involved her performing unusual acts for the platform, like dressing in costumes and having her housekeeper initially help with filming before her friend Maddy took over managing the account. Some actual OnlyFans creators have expressed concern that the show’s portrayal makes their profession a target for ridicule.
Some OnlyFans creators have told Variety they’re concerned the recent portrayal of their work isn’t accurate. Sydney Leathers, a model on the platform since 2017, explained that:
The whole situation feels over-the-top and unrealistic. A lot of what she’s shown doing would actually violate OnlyFans’ rules – things like the baby roleplay with a diaper are a clear example. Payment processors have very firm guidelines that creators must follow, and those rules are constantly becoming more restrictive.
People in the sex industry, including myself, are usually very critical of how Hollywood depicts us. It’s rarely accurate or respectful, and often leans into stereotypes or negativity. It’s natural to feel sensitive when your community is misrepresented in media.
OnlyFans doesn’t allow the type of adult content shown in the series, specifically ‘age-play,’ and accounts sharing it could be shut down. Actress Maitland Ward, known for her roles in White Chicks and Boy Meets World, is upset about how OnlyFans is being portrayed in the show.
The recent incident of someone being portrayed as a baby in explicit content is deeply concerning. It reinforces harmful stereotypes about sex workers, suggesting they lack ethics and will do anything for financial gain. This also fuels the false and damaging idea that sex work is the same as trafficking and abuse. To treat this as a joke is unacceptable, and frankly, not funny at all.
Levinson recently addressed the OnlyFans-inspired storyline involving Sweeney’s character in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He explained that while the visual elements – like Cassie’s appearance – are funny, the humor really comes from the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming the content. However, Ward argues that this choice undermines the storyline’s credibility, preventing it from being taken seriously.
The character of Sweeney is being used for comedic effect, but this approach hasn’t been funny and has actually upset a lot of people, including those who work as content creators. Hollywood has a long history of problematic depictions of sex workers, rarely showing them in a positive light, and unfortunately, the show Euphoria continues this trend.
