NBC has decided to create four new television series, ordering them to production. However, the network has canceled four other potential shows, including a new series starring Emily Deschanel.
Zooey Deschanel was originally going to star in a new series called Key Witness, where she would play a criminal profiler assisting the FBI. However, according to reports, the show won’t be made. This is likely disappointing news for fans of her previous show, Bones, as many hoped Key Witness could fill the void, given the similar type of role.
Key Witness Fails to Make the Cut at NBC
I recently got a look at the pilot for Key Witness, a show developed by Dean Georgaris – you might know him from Quantum Leap – and John Fox. Zooey Deschanel stars as Georgia Ryan, and it’s fascinating to learn the character was actually inspired by a real person, Dr. Ann Burgess, a pioneering criminal profiler. What really stood out was the show’s approach to investigations – focusing on the victims instead of solely on the criminals, which felt genuinely innovative. Honestly, though, it felt like a tough time for pilots, and Key Witness was up against a lot of competition for a series order. It had potential, but it just couldn’t quite break through.
According to NBC Entertainment Chairman Pearlena Igbokwe, the network’s creative teams, headed by Lisa Katz (NBC) and Erin Underhill (Universal Television), created an impressive lineup of eight pilot projects. Igbokwe stated they developed so many strong contenders that it represents a true ’embarrassment of riches,’ allowing them to take risks and ultimately land on shows with the potential to become major hits.
David Boreanaz’s New Series Is Moving Forward
Fans of Bones will be pleased to hear that David Boreanaz, who starred alongside Emily Deschanel in Bones, is also leading a new pilot for a reboot of The Rockford Files. This updated version of the classic TV show features Boreanaz as James Rockford, a private investigator who’s just been released from prison after being wrongly convicted. He’s back on the case in Los Angeles, using his personality and intelligence to solve difficult mysteries, and often finds himself at odds with both the police and criminal organizations.
In addition to the previously mentioned series, three more shows have been ordered: Line of Fire, a dramatic series about a law enforcement family uncovering a dangerous conspiracy; Newlyweds, a comedy following the marriage of a spontaneous woman (Téa Leoni) and a more reserved professor (Tim Daly) after a quick romance; and Sunset P.I., a comedy set in Los Angeles featuring private investigators starring and Jane Levy.
Don’t count out Key Witness just yet – it’s currently being offered to other networks and could still be picked up. In other pilot news, NBC also passed on What the Dead Know starring Taylor Schilling, Puzzled with Damon Wayans Jr., and Jill & Ginger featuring Katey Sagal.
