A Star Wars Icon Just Solved Decades Of Continuity Issues With One Legendary Quote

I’ve finally finished the first season of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord! It was a great ride, with new episodes dropping every Monday and the finale perfectly timed for Star Wars Day on May the 4th. I’m so glad they’re already working on season two! I’m really interested to see how they develop the complicated relationship between Maul and Devon Izara, and how the series ties into the Crimson Dawn storyline we saw in Solo: A Star Wars Story. It’s cool how everything is starting to connect!

Given its place in the Star Wars timeline, the comic Maul – Shadow Lord, which takes place right after The Clone Wars, needed to connect to Maul’s unexpected appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars lore can be complicated with so many films and shows, almost requiring fans to do extra research. However, the way Maul – Shadow Lord’s author, Sam Witwer, bridges that gap is clever and straightforward.

Star Wars Lore Is A “Campfire Story”

Samuel Witwer, as reported by ComicBook, suggests we should think of Star Wars stories like campfire tales. This approach acknowledges that no single character has all the answers within the Star Wars universe, and it’s not necessarily the intention for fans to have them all either.

It’s funny how details change when stories get retold. For example, some people remember Ahsoka Tano’s lightsabers as blue during the Siege of Mandalore, while others say they were green. And when it comes to Starkiller, some claim he physically pulled a Star Destroyer from the sky, while others say he used the Force to influence the pilot. It all depends on who you talk to and where you heard the story – details shift with each telling.

The world of Star Wars covers a vast history, with the story of the Skywalker family unfolding over generations – from The Phantom Menace (32 years before the Battle of Yavin) to The Rise of Skywalker (35 years after the Battle of Yavin). Given the immense size of the galaxy and the countless worlds it contains, it’s natural that some things would be considered legends, or simply remain unknown.

The disconnect between generations is particularly clear in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Characters often seem completely unaware of the events from the earlier films, or only know them as vague rumors. A good example is in The Force Awakens, when Rey, Finn, and Han Solo discuss Luke Skywalker’s location. Their conversation – “It’s true. The Force, the Jedi, all of it. It’s all true” – highlights how the past feels like a distant story to them, almost like a legend.

Star Wars Canon Is Fluid

Aside from the stories officially recognized in Star Wars films and shows, there’s a wealth of content existing in the Legends universe, including the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed games. If the only way to tell the story of Darth Vader’s hidden apprentice – as featured in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and its sequel – is through informal, in-universe storytelling, then that’s acceptable.

With shows like Andor and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord hinting at connections to the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed storyline, fans are increasingly hopeful that the character Galen Marek (Starkiller) will officially become part of the official Star Wars canon. Also, the idea that Devon Izara from Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is actually Darth Talon hasn’t been confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 is currently in development.
