It’s going to be a showdown to the bitter end for Mortal Kombat II.
The new movie Mortal Kombat II, released in 2026, is currently competing for the top spot at the box office. It’s a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, but the fourth movie based on the popular video game series overall. Director Simon McQuoid returns, along with cast members Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, and Jessica McNamee. This time, Karl Urban, Tati Gabrielle, and Adeline Rudolph join the cast as new characters.
According to Deadline, Mortal Kombat II is expected to bring in $40 to $42 million at the U.S. box office this weekend. Despite opening alongside several other new films—like the Hugh Jackman comedy The Sheep Detectives and James Cameron’s concert film Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)—it’s predicted to have the biggest opening weekend of them all.
It’s still uncertain whether the new movie will open at number one. It’s launching right after the successful debut of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which earned an impressive $76.7 million in its first weekend. The Meryl Streep sequel is proving to be a strong competitor, and is expected to drop less than 48% in its second weekend, potentially holding onto the top spot.
The new movie is performing just as well as the original The Devil Wears Prada did when it came out in 2006 – it only saw a 45.5% drop in ticket sales during its second weekend. Current estimates suggest it will earn between $40 and $42 million this weekend, putting it in a close race for the top spot with Mortal Kombat II. Even if it ends up slightly behind the action film, this is a fantastic result for Devil Wears Prada 2. If it continues at this pace, it could potentially gross $900 million worldwide, easily covering its $100 million production cost.
