The original PlayStation (PS1) boasts an incredible game collection, with over 4,000 titles available. Even though only around 1,278 games were released in North America, it still offered a huge selection. Because of this, many excellent games, such as The Granstream Saga, didn’t get the recognition they deserved, as popular hits like Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy VII tended to dominate attention.
Unfortunately, a lot of these classic games haven’t been updated for today’s consoles, but they’re still fun to play. Some lesser-known PlayStation 1 titles have actually gotten better with time, and could have been really popular if more people had discovered them.
Kartia’s Amano Artwork Made It Look Like a Final Fantasy Game
Anyone familiar with Final Fantasy might recognize Kartia: The Word of Fate. The game’s artwork was created by Yoshitaka Amano, well-known for his work on the Final Fantasy series, and the character featured on the cover bears a resemblance to his early design for Terra from Final Fantasy VI.
While Kartia shares some surface-level similarities with Final Fantasy, that’s where the comparisons stop. It’s a deeply intricate strategy RPG focused on summoning. Players cast spells using cards and have to create and equip items right in the middle of combat, which can take some getting used to.
Kartia is a challenging game, becoming particularly tough after the initial battles. Players new to strategy RPGs might find it overwhelming, as the game doesn’t always explain its systems clearly. But if you’re willing to learn and maybe look up a few guides, you’ll find a game with surprisingly deep and flexible tactics.
The Granstream Saga Was Made By a Legendary Developer
Quintet is known for classic JRPGs like Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. However, many fans don’t realize they also created The Granstream Saga, a PlayStation RPG released in 1997. This action RPG was groundbreaking for its time, being one of the first to use fully 3D polygonal graphics.
Quintet games are known for their immersive stories, and The Granstream Saga is a perfect example. The game is set in a flooded, post-apocalyptic world where people now live on floating continents. It’s a relatively short game, taking about 35 hours to complete, but it’s a truly rewarding experience from start to finish.
Vandal Hearts Wasn’t Appreciated in Its Time
Okay, so Vandal Hearts was made by the same folks who did Suikoden at Konami, which already got my attention. When it first came out, though, people were kinda split on it. Reviewers complained it was too simple – no towns to wander around in, not much exploring to do. But honestly? Now that I’ve played it, that simplicity is exactly what makes it great. It cuts out all the fluff and lets the awesome gameplay really stand out.
Vandal Hearts is a strategy RPG where you move characters on a grid, but it’s more than just that. It has complex systems that make it unique. The game’s levels are designed to make you think – you’ll need to use objects in the environment and carefully position your characters to win battles and improve their abilities. Both this game and its sequel are must-plays for fans of strategy RPGs.
Monster Seed Should Have Been a Pokémon Competitor
Released in 1998, Monster Seed is a unique role-playing game where players collect ancient seeds that grow into monsters. You nurture these monsters as they develop, and once fully grown, they fight alongside you in battle.
Despite having a great idea, Monster Seed became a relatively unknown game on the original PlayStation. A major issue was the poor English translation, which contained many grammatical mistakes. This hidden gem is definitely a classic that deserves a second look.
Blaze and Blade: Eternal Quest Is a PS1 RPG With Multiplayer
Blaze and Blade: Eternal Quest was unusual for a PlayStation 1 JRPG because it let up to four players team up for multiplayer. Although the story wasn’t very complex, the game was incredibly fun, particularly when played with friends as it was designed to be.
The main drawback of Blaze and Blade was its reliance on the multitap controller for the best experience. While still enjoyable with a friend, or by using AI-controlled characters to fill out the team, most players ended up playing a less complete version of the game.
Brigandine Is Final Fantasy Tactics’ Biggest Competitor
Many consider Final Fantasy Tactics a classic, but Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena is a strong contender. In the game, you command one of six different nations, each with unique units and ways to play, and lead them through a large-scale war.
While the beautiful character designs and impressive worldbuilding are noteworthy, the gameplay is what truly shines in Brigandine. Its innovative mechanics add depth to battles, where each turn represents a full month within the game. Ultimately, Brigandine plays more like a large-scale strategy game than a typical tactical RPG, and that’s what makes it stand out.
Azure Dreams Would Be a Hit If It Was Released Today
Azure Dreams feels like a game destined for success on Steam. It combines the genres of JRPG and roguelike, letting you catch and collect monsters to fight alongside you. Outside of exploring dungeons, you can build relationships with seven different characters and use your earnings to expand and customize your town with amenities like a casino or bowling alley.
While the mix of different game types in Azure Dreams might seem overwhelming, it all comes together surprisingly well. The gameplay is incredibly addictive, making it hard to stop playing. The game was also released on Game Boy Color with even more monsters, and both versions are true classics that deserved to be huge hits.
