Sam Raimi’s original film was so terrifying it was actually banned in some countries. Despite this, the Evil Dead series became incredibly popular, establishing itself as a long-running franchise and introducing audiences to the unforgettable Ash Williams. Now, with Evil Dead Rise, the series seems to be revisiting the intense horror that first made it famous, similar to what audiences experienced with Ash’s initial adventures.
While Evil Dead is fundamentally a horror series, it’s evolved over the years to include comedy and action. The newest installment, Evil Dead Burn>, seems to be doubling down on action, shifting away from the recent focus on horror and offering a welcome change of pace.
Evil Dead is a Franchise That’s no Stranger to Changing Styles
The original Evil Dead is a classic horror film that distinguished itself by portraying Ash Williams not just as a hero, but as someone deeply traumatized. He suffered devastating losses – his friends, sister, and girlfriend – and while he fought back with weapons like a shotgun, he was often crippled by fear and unable to act.
After losing his hand in Evil Dead II, Ash conquered his fear and embraced fighting as the key to survival. This transformation turned him into a legendary horror action hero, complete with a chainsaw hand and a shotgun. Known for his sarcastic wit and fighting skills, Ash battled the Deadites across time, and even made a comeback in the three-season series Ash vs. Evil Dead.
The 2013 Evil Dead reboot marked a return to the series’ horror roots, becoming significantly darker, more violent, and more disturbing than previous installments. After more than ten years since Army of Darkness, this shift back to horror was a welcome change, and that trend continued with Evil Dead Rise.
Despite featuring plenty of action, Evil Dead Rise stayed true to the horror roots of the Evil Dead series. This helped bring new fans to the franchise and allows Evil Dead Burn to build on the past while creating a fresh and thrilling direction for the future.
Evil Dead Burn is Bringing the Action Back to the Franchise
The film includes several elements that horror fans have been hoping for, like the return of the Necronomicon and a family falling victim to its evil. Even turning the family dog into a Deadite is a thrilling idea. Overall, it captures a similar feel to the 2013 Evil Dead movie.
The lighting creates a cold, unsettling atmosphere, and the Deadites appear more lively and gruesome than before. If this movie is taking cues from the 2013 film, it makes sense why these creatures are even more aggressive and brutal. The Deadites in that earlier installment were particularly frightening. However, unlike previous films where people mostly run from the undead, this trailer suggests a more proactive approach – a fight against them.
The core of this story is about survival – how far people will go and how hard they’ll fight when pushed to their breaking point. While there’s plenty of action, it serves to highlight that struggle. The trailer for Evil Dead Burn demonstrates this, showing the characters are not only fighting to live, but are already hardened to violence, even resorting to gruesome measures like dismemberment – as seen with the character wielding a saw.
These Deadites look incredibly dangerous, so a strong fighting spirit is essential. While bringing action back into the Evil Dead franchise feels a little risky after its recent revival, the series has always been known for taking chances. Considering the current moment, it actually feels like the perfect time to ramp up the action.
Evil Dead Burn’s Action Focus Is Perfect Timing
Horror movies have always been great at scaring audiences, ranging from shocking experiences to subtly creepy films like Nosferatu. Evil Dead Burn, with its focus on action, arrives at a good time – it’s not the first horror movie to successfully blend action with scares recently.
Recent horror movies like They Will Kill You and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come successfully blend scary moments with exciting action. While this combination isn’t new, it’s a welcome trend that keeps the genre feeling lively and entertaining – a classic approach done well.
The new series, Evil Dead Burn, promises to be genuinely frightening, keeping viewers on edge throughout. But it’s also thrilling to anticipate a point where the characters are so terrified, even screaming won’t help. The best part of the Evil Dead movies has always been watching the heroes battle the undead, and this series delivers that action with a stylish and entertaining energy that Ash Williams himself would appreciate.
This new installment marks a potential shift for the Evil Dead franchise, possibly returning to its action-packed roots. While the action might not be as over-the-top as before, its presence is still a welcome change. After years of focusing solely on horror, it’s refreshing to see the characters finally have a fighting chance. Looking ahead, the future of Evil Dead looks promising. To maintain a good balance with the increased action, the series will likely ramp up the horror elements – something it’s always been known for.
