The upcoming Dunk and Egg series has joined the ranks of HBO’s most prestigious shows, building on the success of Game of Thrones and expanding that universe.
During a recent earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced that the new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is performing exceptionally well, becoming one of HBO’s most popular new shows ever. He shared that the first season is currently averaging 36 million viewers worldwide per episode – surpassing the 20 million average for the second season of The Pitt.
The strong audience numbers for the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continue the Game of Thrones franchise’s winning streak on HBO, which began with the original series in 2011. Following eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the successful prequel House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is another big hit, proving the franchise is a key driver of success for the network.
By the end of its first season in October 2022, House of the Dragon was averaging 29 million viewers per episode in the US, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. In comparison, the final season of Game of Thrones reportedly averaged around 44.2 million viewers per episode, despite its divisive ending.
Recent HBO shows like The Last of Us (season 1, 2023) and the upcoming IT: Welcome to Derry (season 1, 2025) have quickly become some of the network’s most popular premieres, with more seasons already planned or being developed. Similar to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, these shows are based on well-known stories that already have a large and dedicated following.
After the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ended in February, Game of Thrones will continue with season 3 of House of the Dragon on June 21. This season will cover most of the Targaryen civil war. Then, in 2027, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will return for a second season, created by Ira Parker and George R.R. Martin, though HBO hasn’t announced a specific release date yet.
A movie based on Game of Thrones is officially happening! Warner Bros. announced at CinemaCon 2026 that they’re developing a film called Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. The movie will tell the story of King Aegon I Targaryen’s famous takeover of Westeros, which occurred about 300 years before the events of the original series.
Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is being filmed now, but production was recently delayed by heavy flooding in Spain. Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell will reprise their roles as Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aegon Targaryen, respectively. Joining them this season are Lucy Boynton as Lady Rohanne Webber, Babou Ceesay as Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, and Peter Mullan as Ser Eustace Osgrey.
