The 1990s offered some truly fantastic television, and these ten shows are just a taste of what made the decade so special. Unlike the 1980s, which were known for sitcoms, the 1990s saw TV become more innovative, unique, and groundbreaking.
The 1990s were a turning point for television. Shows started pushing boundaries and audiences were eager for fresh, innovative content. This decade saw the rise of shows that mixed genres – like sci-fi, comedy, and horror – and set new trends in animation. While many excellent shows aired during this period, these 10 particularly defined the era between 1990 and 2000.
Seinfeld
1989-1998
Many consider Seinfeld the funniest show ever made, and it truly paved the way for today’s sitcoms – shows like The Office and Hacks all owe it a lot. The show centers around four friends in New York City – Jerry Seinfeld, Cosmo Kramer, George Costanza, and Elaine Benes – and their often self-centered adventures through daily life.
This show is hilarious from start to finish, and everyone gets in on the joke – there’s no single ‘straight man’ character. It proved you could create a funny sitcom without needing a traditional hero’s journey or character development. While the main goal is comedy, the show also takes the time to build a detailed and immersive world, even if it’s populated by quirky and frustrating characters.
The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air
1990-1996
The show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air features Will Smith playing a character based on his own life. When Will gets into trouble back home in West Philadelphia, his family sends him to live with his wealthy relatives in the fancy Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. He finds that growing up with a simple background is very different from the luxurious lifestyle of his new surroundings.
The actors in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air work wonderfully together – the Banks family feels like a real, cohesive unit. This not only makes the show’s comedic moments even funnier, but also makes the more heartfelt scenes truly resonate. Because we see how much the Banks care for Will, his conflicts with them are amusing, and his growing dependence on them is genuinely touching.
Beverly Hills, 90210
1990-2000
Beverly Hills, 90210, often shortened to just 90210, is a teen drama that aired on Fox. It follows a group of friends as they navigate life after high school in Beverly Hills, California, through college and into adulthood. The show focuses on the challenges and experiences of growing up through their stories.
Despite a slow start with low ratings in its first season, 90210 quickly became a huge hit, capturing the public’s attention and making its actors famous. The show essentially created the modern teen drama, and many popular series like The Lizzie McGuire Show and Pretty Little Liars likely wouldn’t have been made without it.
The Larry Sanders Show
1992-1998
Garry Shandling, who recently passed away, was famous for starring in The Larry Sanders Show, a truly innovative HBO comedy. Despite its dedicated fanbase, the show’s real impact hasn’t always been fully recognized. The series cleverly portrays the behind-the-scenes world of a late-night talk show, focusing on the life of the host, Larry, and his often-complicated relationships with celebrities and the television network.
The Larry Sanders Show was a groundbreaking comedy that cleverly poked fun at the entertainment industry. It felt remarkably modern for its time, and its format – featuring celebrities playing exaggerated versions of themselves, often as demanding and difficult personalities – has clearly inspired shows like Extras, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and many projects associated with Judd Apatow.
Batman: The Animated Series
1992-1995
Among all the animated superhero shows that people still talk about and enjoy today, Batman: The Animated Series is considered one of the very best. Despite only lasting two seasons, it’s a hugely important show, both for animated superhero stories and the history of Batman itself.
As a huge fan of Tim Burton’s Batman films, I was completely blown away by TAS – that’s Batman: The Animated Series. It’s a much more mature and psychologically rich show than most superhero cartoons, really digging into what makes Bruce Wayne tick, alongside all the classic villains. And honestly, the animation still holds up incredibly well – that unique, almost chalkboard-drawn style was groundbreaking and continues to influence artists today. It’s a show that truly left its mark.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
1993-1999
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the fourth television series in the Star Trek franchise and is frequently considered one of the best. Unlike earlier Star Trek shows that took place on starships, DS9 is set on a space station – Deep Space Nine – which is positioned near a unique, stable wormhole.
Deep Space Nine transforms into a bustling hub for all kinds of travelers – explorers, merchants, politicians, and even criminals – passing through a newly discovered wormhole. Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and his crew work to maintain order, all while navigating complex, ongoing personal dramas – a style of storytelling new to Star Trek, which had previously focused more on self-contained episodes.
The X-Files
1993-2002, 2016-2018
As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi, but The X-Files is a classic. It’s basically a blend of crime thriller and science fiction, following two FBI agents – Fox Mulder and Dana Scully – as they tackle the cases nobody else will touch. These are the unsolved mysteries, the strange occurrences, the things that hint at something…paranormal. They call all those weird cases ‘The X-Files,’ and honestly, it’s addictive stuff.
Even though The X-Files continued airing into the 2000s, with a revival season in 2018, it’s still strongly associated with the 1990s. What started as a popular cult favorite has become the defining paranormal TV show, and the name The X-Files is now almost synonymous with the paranormal itself.
Friends
1994-2004
The TV show Friends centers around the lives of six friends in Manhattan, New York City. The characters – Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross – have become incredibly well-known and are a big part of popular culture.
I just love this sitcom! It really feels like it set the stage for so many of the comedies we enjoy today. Okay, the laugh track and the clothes are a bit old-fashioned, but honestly, the jokes still land, and the characters feel so real. What I appreciate most is how they grow and change throughout the show – it all feels so genuine and earned, and it’s incredibly satisfying to watch.
Mr. Show With Bob And David
1995-1998
Mr. Show with Bob and David is an American comedy series featuring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Similar to The Larry Sanders Show, it has a dedicated fanbase despite being highly influential in shaping modern sketch comedy. The show presents both pre-recorded and live sketches, covering everything from everyday situations to bizarre and surreal scenarios.
This series has been incredibly influential, inspiring shows like Portlandia, Key & Peele, The Whitest Kids U’ Know, Abbott Elementary, and Human Giant. Bob Odenkirk was a producer on Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and his recent appearance on I Think You Should Leave shows how much he’s impacted Tim Robinson’s unique, surreal comedic style.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
1997-2003
Though Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from the late 1990s into the 2000s, many fans consider the earlier seasons to be the strongest. Created by Joss Whedon, the seven-season show features Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, a high schooler who secretly fights vampires and other monsters.
This show blends self-contained adventures with an overarching season-long story, creating a thrilling and engaging supernatural drama about growing up. Like many Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, it features the same witty humor, and its unique mix of comedy, horror, and action continues to influence television and film.
