Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from episode 6, “Though the Heavens Fall,” of The Boys season 5. If you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to avoid reading further.
As the season nears its end with only two episodes left, The Boys is more captivating than ever, particularly after Soldier Boy’s recent shocking move. Since reappearing in season 5, Soldier Boy has been a key player in the series, once again becoming a major villain, all while dealing with a complicated relationship with his son, Homelander.
Throughout the season, Homelander and Soldier Boy have had a complicated relationship. They began as allies, but clashed during the Fort Harmony episode of The Boys, only to reconcile by the end of last week’s installment. Their renewed partnership faced another challenge when Sister Sage strategically left a video for them to discover, revealing information about Stormfront.
The truth about Soldier Boy’s past relationship and Homelander’s hidden secrets finally came to light, causing another major conflict between them. This revelation led many to believe Soldier Boy might be the one to defeat Homelander in season 5 of The Boys, as he’s one of the few characters powerful enough to challenge him.
His willingness to face Bombsight after Sage contacted him made it clear he intended to destroy the V-One, preventing Homelander from becoming immortal and leaving him susceptible to the supe virus. However, surprisingly, Soldier Boy chose to give the substance to his son, who then let Homelander inject it, ultimately making Homelander even more powerful.
This development completely derailed The Boys’ strategy and genuinely shocked Sage, who’s known as the show’s most intelligent character. It left everyone fighting against Homelander feeling defeated and made him seem nearly invincible. Now, understanding why Soldier Boy made such a pivotal choice is more important than ever.
Soldier Boy’s Decision To Give Homelander V-One Explained
Soldier Boy was firm in his belief that Homelander shouldn’t receive the V-One and didn’t deserve immortality. It would take a significant event to make him change his mind, particularly after witnessing the footage of Homelander and Stormfront. Surprisingly, it was actually Stormfront who ultimately swayed him, as he thought she would have wanted Homelander to get the V-One.
The connection between Soldier Boy and Liberty hasn’t been fully explained in The Boys, but their upcoming Vought Rising series will likely reveal more about their history. It’s surprising, though, that Soldier Boy remembers her so fondly, given that she was a Nazi who continued to believe in those hateful ideas even after becoming Stormfront.
Honestly, even though Liberty’s gone, it’s clear he still loves her so much. It blew my mind that he’d set aside his total disgust for Homelander and just give him the V-One! He actually said it’s what Stormfront would have wanted, and that seems to be the only reason he did it – besides, you know, the fact that Homelander’s his son. It’s just… wow. It shows how much Liberty still means to him, even after everything.
Despite this, he’s never seemed particularly proud of Homelander, even calling him a “strange and emotionally detached person.” He’s admitted that without Stormfront’s influence, he would have likely destroyed the V-One right in front of his son. Instead, he acknowledged Homelander’s superior strength and voluntarily gave him the powerful substance.
Homelander questioned why Soldier Boy would help him, pointing out, “But you hate me.” Soldier Boy simply replied, “I loved her more.” This exchange reveals that Soldier Boy prioritized fulfilling Stormfront’s goals – even if it meant destroying the world through Homelander – setting up a dangerous situation as the season comes to a close.
Why Sister Sage Failed To Predict Soldier Boy’s Change Of Heart
Since joining The Boys in season 4, Sister Sage has been secretly manipulating events. She was recruited by Homelander and skillfully built him a devoted following, effectively giving him control over the country – all without fully revealing her plan, even to him.
Even though she’s the most intelligent character in the show, she still makes mistakes, as demonstrated by what happened with Soldier Boy. She brought Soldier Boy to the location where The Boys were planning to face Bombsight, hoping he could persuade him to give up the V-One, and that he would then destroy it.
Her prediction turned out to be incorrect, despite Ashley reading Soldier Boy’s mind, which suggested a mistake in her assessment. The most likely reason for the error was that she underestimated how deeply Soldier Boy cared for Stormfront. She thought planting the tape would enrage him and end his connection with Homelander, but she failed to account for his feelings for Stormfront.
She understood Soldier Boy was still affected by his past relationship, but she severely misjudged how strongly he still felt for Stormfront, and it caused a major problem. However, it’s possible Sister Sage orchestrated everything as part of a larger scheme in The Boys. She might not be telling the truth about her motives and could have another surprise in store.
Sage warned The Boys not to trust her, a comment that felt like a direct address to viewers. But given that her scheme with Thomas Godolkin failed in Gen V season 2, it’s just as possible she simply became too sure of herself and overlooked something important while trying to start a conflict between superheroes and regular people.
Honestly, I don’t think we’ll really know what’s going on with Soldier Boy until the last couple episodes, if ever. But right now, it feels like Sage is so sure of herself that everyone’s missing the fact he might be changing sides. Or, you know, maybe she’s playing a much longer game and she’s the one faking everything. It’s a total head-scratcher!
Can Homelander Actually Be Killed Now?
With Homelander now having injected himself with V-One, the storyline is effectively finished, and it’s hard to imagine how anyone could defeat him. The virus is no longer a viable solution, and even the combined strength of Kimiko, Starlight, and Butcher doesn’t seem enough to stand a chance against him.
Viewers are likely asking if Homelander is actually vulnerable. The good news is he can be defeated, and there are a few ways to do it. For example, even with V-One in his system, Soldier Boy can still strip Homelander of his powers.
We witnessed him take away Bombsight’s powers, demonstrating that V-One doesn’t protect supes from this specific ability. Therefore, if someone could somehow get Soldier Boy to fight his son again, it would likely be the most reliable way to severely weaken him, making it possible for almost anyone to defeat him.
However, there’s more than one way to beat him. While most super-powered individuals struggle against the villain, Ryan nearly defeated Stormfront, suggesting he might be able to do the same to his father if the situation is right.
Their last fight was a clear win for Homelander, but Ryan might be able to surprise him and actually hurt him. We also don’t fully know how strong Butcher is. He easily defeated Victoria Neuman, but had a lot of trouble fighting Bombsight, so his abilities are unpredictable.
Currently, he’d probably lose in a direct fight, but Butcher might be able to boost his abilities, even at a great personal risk. There’s also a small possibility that someone like Queen Maeve could return – she’s wounded Homelander before – which means, despite the difficult situation, Homelander isn’t invincible.
The Boys Season 5, Episode 6’s Big Showdown Sets Up Vought Rising
I’m so excited for the upcoming Boys spinoff! It’s incredible to think the main show is wrapping up seven seasons of storytelling, but this new series feels like a natural extension, especially after that huge showdown in season 5, episode 6. I’m really looking forward to seeing Jensen Ackles back as Soldier Boy, and Aya Cash as Liberty will be amazing! Plus, I was thrilled to see Mason Dye will be returning as Bombsight – his debut was fantastic, and I can’t wait to see more of his character.
I was fascinated to discover this deep, longstanding rivalry between Soldier Boy and him! It feels like that history is going to be a huge part of the bigger story we’re seeing unfold with Vought Rising. And honestly, I’m really intrigued by the connection between Soldier Boy and Liberty – it seems like their relationship will be central, and his choice to give Homelander that V-One substance felt like a deliberate setup for what’s coming in the 2027 show. It definitely has me thinking about what’s next!
It’s natural some viewers might feel the show has spent too much time on the Vought Rising storyline, but Soldier Boy has been a standout character. His recent confrontation with Homelander is important both for understanding his backstory and for what’s happening in the current season.
Season 5 of The Boys suggested Quinn might play a key part in the upcoming Vought Rising spin-off, and included several other hints about the new show. This clearly shows the creators have high expectations for its success. Hopefully, all this setup will build enough excitement so the final episodes of The Boys can concentrate on wrapping up the main story in a satisfying way.
The showdown between Soldier Boy and Homelander after the battle with Bombsight was a major highlight of season five, proving that The Boys is still set to finish strong, even with new spin-off shows in development.
