James Gunn’s Superman Sequel Adds Matthew Lillard to Cast

The upcoming Superman sequel from James Gunn has added Matthew Lillard to its cast. Lillard, who recently appeared in the Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again, will play a currently unknown character in the DC film.

The film’s director, James Gunn, is working again with Matthew Lillard, who famously portrayed Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies.

Matthew Lillard Joins a Stacked Man of Tomorrow Cast

Damian Lillard has recently been playing exceptionally well, reminiscent of his earlier success. This positive turn comes after a period where he was instrumental in launching a popular film series with his leading role in the first installment.

The new movie, Man of Tomorrow, stars David Corenswet as Superman. He’ll join forces with Nicholas Hoult, playing Lex Luthor, to protect Earth from the powerful villain Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger. The film establishes a broader DC Universe and features a supporting cast including Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Before filming began, James Gunn explained this isn’t simply a Superman movie. He’d already created storyboards for nearly the entire film a couple of months in advance, believing that extensive pre-production work would save time and effort during filming and editing.

Filming of Man of Tomorrow Is Already Underway

It’s unclear what role Damian Lillard will play. Will he be a powerful hero, or will he be an ordinary person thrown into an extraordinary situation, similar to his part in Daredevil: Born Again? If it’s the latter, the world he’s entering will be very different from his MCU appearance. This time, he’ll face god-like aliens and other incredibly powerful beings, rather than just street-level heroes and corrupt villains.

Filming for Man of Tomorrow started in April, nine months before Superman hits theaters. The production is happening at Trilith Studios in Georgia, with more filming scheduled to take place in Macon, Cincinnati, and the United Kingdom, and is expected to wrap up around mid-2026.

Even as that movie is being made, James Gunn and Peter Saffran, who jointly lead DC Studios, are still developing more projects for the DC Universe. The series Lanterns will debut in August, and a film featuring Clayface is planned for October.

Man of Tomorrow is set to open in theaters on July 9, 2027.
