MTG Card Sells for a Record-Breaking $3 Million in 2026

There’s a new record for the most expensive card of all time, and this time it isn’t The One Ring.

According to IGN, a rare Magic: The Gathering card has just been sold at auction for $3 million, making it the most expensive card in the game’s history. This particular Black Lotus card was professionally graded as “Pristine” with a perfect 10 rating and has now taken the record for the highest price ever paid for a Magic: The Gathering card.

Magic: The Gathering’s New Most Expensive Card Actually Deserves the Title

CGC announced that a comic book sale broke previous records in a private deal between Adam Cai of Pristine Collectibles and an unknown buyer.

The Alpha Black Lotus is a highly prized Magic: The Gathering card because so few of them exist, making it very valuable. Collectors constantly search for copies to complete their collections. This specific Alpha Black Lotus is especially desirable – it’s in perfect condition and has received a perfect grade of 10 from CGC, which explains its extremely high price.

The Black Lotus is widely considered one of the most powerful cards in Magic: The Gathering, and it’s highly sought after by both collectors and players. Its extreme rarity, combined with its power, has made it one of the most valuable trading cards since it was first released in the original Magic: The Gathering set, Alpha, in 1993.

A Black Lotus card recently sold for over $500,000, making it one of the most expensive Magic: The Gathering cards ever auctioned. While the card hadn’t been officially graded, it was signed by Christopher Rush, the talented artist who originally created the Black Lotus and many other iconic Magic: The Gathering cards.

The price difference between these two Black Lotus cards is significant and hard to ignore, particularly since they were sold so close together in time. While the Black Lotus isn’t the only Magic: The Gathering card with a very high price, it’s not the only one that’s sold for millions of dollars.

Last year, Wizards of the Coast released a highly collectible Magic: The Gathering card as part of The Lord of the Rings set. This special version of The One Ring featured unique artwork not available anywhere else. A Canadian Magic: The Gathering player obtained the serialized card and later sold it to the musician Post Malone for over $2 million.
