The popular BBC comedy series is back with a new season, and it’s already receiving positive reviews, earning a high score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Over the years, the BBC has created a lot of excellent comedy shows, including beloved classics like Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, and Last of the Summer Wine. Even with recent issues, the BBC is still known as a top-quality source for funny and enjoyable comedy.
Mockumentaries are a consistently popular and smart way to create comedy, and one of the first examples on British television was the series People Like Us, which started on BBC Radio 4 before moving to BBC 2. While many mockumentaries have followed, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s The Office, with its 14 episodes, is often considered the most famous example from the BBC.
Alongside popular shows like The Office, the BBC has created another brilliantly funny mockumentary. Twenty Twelve cleverly poked fun at the way the BBC runs things, and also satirized the organization of big sporting events like the 2012 London Olympics. Hugh Bonneville starred as the man in charge of delivering the games, and he returned in the follow-up series, W1A, playing a similar role focused on the BBC’s core principles.
The popular series has expanded with a third installment, Twenty Twenty Six, which is currently being broadcast on BBC. The show follows Ian Fletcher, played by Hugh Bonneville, as he navigates the challenges of being Director of Integrity for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Hugh Skinner returns as Will Humphrey, and David Tennant once again provides the narration.
As a big fan of these shows, I was checking out the scores on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s great to see Twenty Twenty Six is doing so well with critics! It’s currently sitting at 78% based on nine reviews, which is actually a little better than Twenty Twelve managed – that one got 75%. Looking back at the whole series, season 3 of W1A is the highest rated with an impressive 80%, though not every season has a score available. It’s promising to see the franchise consistently getting positive attention!
Twenty Twenty Six keeps up the clever parody that this series has become known for over the last 15 years. Though it might not be considered one of the greatest British comedies ever, it definitely offers a humorous take on current culture and has moved the show in a really enjoyable direction.
The Rotten Tomatoes score for Twenty Twenty Six might change as more reviews come in and the show ends, but its current positive score suggests a second season could happen. Right now, viewers are enjoying the show’s unique blend of British comedy set in America, which gives it a new and interesting focus.
Twenty Twenty Six is currently airing on BBC 2 and BBC iPlayer.
