The Marvel movies showcase many of its strongest heroes, and fans often discuss who would win in a fight between them or which hero is best equipped to defeat specific villains.
Once superheroes started appearing in movies, it sparked more discussion about their actual strength. Instead of just seeing them battle in comic books, audiences could now watch those fights unfold with incredible detail, frame by frame.
Movie creators understand audiences love seeing heroes demonstrate their power, and they’ve consistently found ways to showcase it in films like those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even in earlier movies.
Movies are a fantastic way for artists to demonstrate their love for these characters and share them with the world. While every Marvel film includes impressive displays of the heroes’ abilities, certain scenes truly showcase the most powerful characters in Marvel history.
Thor: Ragnarok — The Hulk
Fans often argue about which Marvel movie shows the Hulk at his most powerful. Some believe it’s the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, while others point to his fight with the Hulkbuster in Avengers: Age of Ultron as the peak of his strength.
Many consider Thor: Ragnarok the strongest film in the series, not because of Hulk’s physical power, but because of his mental control. The movie shows Hulk able to suppress Bruce Banner, preventing him from reverting to human form. This discovery deeply frightens Banner, who is worried about how powerful Hulk is becoming.
Interestingly, when Bruce Banner briefly returns, he explains to Thor that he’s afraid of transforming into the Hulk, fearing he might lose control permanently. Although this situation evolved after his defeat in Infinity War, it remains a powerful scene showcasing the Hulk at his most formidable in the films.
Fantastic Four: First Steps — Susan Storm, aka Invisible Woman
Many comic book fans consider Susan Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, to be the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four. Although she isn’t as physically strong as The Thing, her force fields let her manipulate and move incredibly large objects.
I really saw how well this team works together in their first MCU outing, Fantastic Four: First Steps. There’s this huge battle where they’re trying to shove Galactus into a portal – basically, sending him packing across the universe so he can’t bother Earth anymore. Susan really takes the lead, using her powers to push him back, and the rest of the team jumps in to help however they can. It was a great display of teamwork!
Although it costs her life, Susan Storm’s incredible effort is successful: she manages to push Galactus into the portal. The Silver Surfer deals a final attack as Galactus attempts to come back, but it was Susan who initially forced him through the gateway.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 — Celestial Star Lord
The second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, directed by James Gunn, delved into Peter Quill’s history by introducing his father. However, the most compelling part of the film was discovering the extent of Peter’s powers as he began to understand his Celestial heritage.
The climactic battle happens inside Ego, the Living Planet. Peter uses the powers his father taught him to buy his friends time to escape and fight back against Ego. He employs everything from strong punches to a massive, Pac-Man-like form to keep Ego distracted, allowing the team to detonate a bomb and ultimately defeat him.
Despite ultimately losing his powers in the film, Celestial Star Lord remains incredibly powerful, ranking among the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe. He’s demonstrated the ability to battle a living planet and even wield the Power Stone without any assistance.
X-Men: The Last Stand — Jean Grey
Though many fans were disappointed with how the original X-Men trilogy ended, Jean Grey’s transformation into the Dark Phoenix still showcased her incredible power.
Jean Grey is incredibly powerful and destructive in this movie. She effortlessly defeats characters, even iconic ones like Cyclops and Professor X. During the climactic fight on Alcatraz, she fully embraces her abilities and destroys everything in her way.
Only Wolverine, with his incredible healing ability, has a chance of stopping her, but even he’s severely challenged as she relentlessly damages him. This version of the character is truly terrifying, and ultimately, she had to be defeated to save the world.
Eternals — The Eternals
Despite often being forgotten, this Marvel movie actually showcases some of the MCU’s most powerful heroes. These ancient beings are the oldest superheroes in Earth’s history and played a key role in helping humanity advance and evolve.
After discovering that their entire existence was based on a deception by the Celestial Arishem, most of them rebelled against his intention to destroy Earth, instead uniting to prevent Tiamut’s emergence.
Each Eternal is a powerful being with special abilities. But when they combine their powers through the Uni-Mind, they become even more formidable. This ability to unite and achieve god-like strength is a major asset, and the movie demonstrates it effectively when they use it to empower Sersi and successfully petrify Tiamut.
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness — Corrupted Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch is already established as one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She proved her strength by facing off against Thanos in the climactic battle of Endgame, and earlier, she demonstrated incredible power by creating a fantasy reality that enveloped an entire town in WandaVision.
In Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff reaches the peak of her power, but becomes corrupted by the Darkhold. The dark magic from the book, originally taken from Agatha Harkness, transforms her into a formidable and dangerous opponent. She gains the ability to warp reality itself and even escape the Mirror Dimension without needing a sling ring.
Additionally, she effortlessly defeats the Illuminati, eliminating them brutally. While her descent into corruption turned her into a flawed hero, it also revealed her immense power when unleashed.
Avengers: Endgame — Captain Marvel
The epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga brought together a huge team of heroes for a final, desperate battle against Thanos to save the universe. The unforgettable fight showed off the incredible power and courage of many beloved characters.
Captain Marvel was clearly the most powerful hero. She single-handedly defeated Thanos’s fleet after they attacked, and then easily overpowered Thanos himself in a direct confrontation, barely reacting even when he tried to strike her.
He can only beat her by removing the Power Stone from the Gauntlet and striking her with a punch fueled by its energy. This moment really showcases just how incredibly strong she is, as she effortlessly fought off the MCU’s most dangerous villain.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 — Adam Warlock
Many viewers felt Adam Warlock didn’t get enough screen time in the latest Guardians film, but he remains the most powerful hero we’ve seen in Marvel’s cosmic adventures so far. He’s not only incredibly strong, but he also has the potential to be immortal.
Originally designed by the Sovereign to be the ultimate enemy of the Guardians, this powerful being proves to be a formidable opponent, pushing them to their limits – and nearly defeating Rocket, which sparks their latest journey. No matter what the Guardians do, they can’t seem to shake him as he relentlessly pursues them across the galaxy.
What truly makes him a threat is his emotional immaturity. He was removed from his growth pod prematurely in Volume 3, leaving him with the mind of a child trapped in an adult body. This leads to impulsive decisions and unnecessary destruction. But after his mother’s death, he starts to grow up, learning responsibility as he rescues Peter and begins to understand what it means to be a hero.
The Marvels — Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, And Monica Rambeau
Despite having some of Marvel’s most powerful heroes – including Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau – the movie performed worse than any other in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once they learned to work together, this trio had the potential to be a formidable force.
What really grabbed me about these characters in the movie is how much they need each other. It’s a cool concept – whenever they use their powers simultaneously, there’s a chance they’ll switch bodies! As they get to know each other and practice, though, they learn to control it and become this incredible team. They’re basically unstoppable when they combine their light powers, and it’s awesome to watch them take down anyone who gets in their way.
Void/Sentry — Thunderbolts*
As a huge movie fan, I have to say Bob was the biggest surprise of the whole Multiverse Saga for me! The marketing for Thunderbolts made him look like just a regular guy, but when he transforms into Sentry, wow – his power is seriously intimidating. It really came out of nowhere!
When Sentry’s darker side, Void, takes control, his powers start making people in New York City disappear into a terrifying other dimension, leaving only ghostly outlines behind. It’s shocking how easily he sends people away to this place without any hesitation, and the movie immediately shows this happening with the abrupt vanishing of a young girl.
Void is incredibly powerful—so much so that the end of the movie suggests the heroes are now dedicated to preventing him from ever reappearing. He’s a truly formidable threat, and that’s saying something considering the other powerful characters we’ve seen in Marvel films.
