While anime is often thought of as being for kids, most fans are actually teenagers or adults. The show’s complicated stories and long-running plots appeal more to viewers who can really dive into them. However, some anime, particularly in the ‘shonen’ genre, do feature incredibly powerful children who sometimes even surpass the main characters in strength.
These young characters aren’t just there for fun or laughs; they represent incredible, hidden power – the kind that makes shonen heroes so unforgettable. Whether they’re born with special talents or hardened by tough experiences, these strong kids change our understanding of what true power is. They show that in a world demanding constant improvement, age is no obstacle to becoming incredibly strong.
Bleach’s Yachiru Hides Deadly Power Under a Playful Smile
Yachiru Kusajishi from Bleach is a beloved character known for her playful relationship with Zaraki Kenpachi. While fans enjoyed their fun interactions, many questioned how someone so young could hold the position of Vice-Captain in the 11th Division. Yachiru first showed off her strong spiritual energy during the Soul Society arc, and her only major battle took place in .
Despite losing to Gremmy Thoumeaux, Yachiru demonstrated incredible fighting ability with her Zanpakuto – its power allowed her to cut opponents even before her blade connected, making it exceptionally strong. This led many fans to wonder if she was actually Kenpachi’s Zanpakuto, especially since she disappeared when he first activated his Shikai. This theory gained further support when Kenpachi achieved Bankai, a transformation made possible by Yachiru’s presence.
Son Gohan’s Dragon Ball Z Awakening Allows Him to Surpass Goku
While Goku started as a young character, his son, Gohan, truly represented the idea of hidden strength in Dragon Ball Z. Gohan could unexpectedly unleash incredible power, often when he was very upset or stressed, allowing him to defeat enemies much stronger than he seemed. With training from Piccolo and Goku, Gohan became even more powerful, mastering both Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 – a level his father hadn’t yet reached at that time.
Gohan’s incredible power and his victory over Cell as a young boy are among the most memorable scenes in Dragon Ball Z. Similar to his father, Goku, Gohan matured throughout the series, but he was already exceeding the limits of powerful warriors at a very young age. If Gohan embraces his role as a fighter, his potential is limitless.
Demon Slayer Showcases Nezuko’s Rise from Victim to Champion
The story centers on a young hero’s quest to protect his sister, Nezuko, and find a way to turn her back into a human. Though she starts as the typical character in need of rescuing, Nezuko quickly breaks that mold and becomes incredibly powerful. Even while battling her demonic side, she displays amazing strength, speed, and can heal from injuries just as quickly as the strongest demons.
Nezuko’s unique ability, Exploding Blood, creates pink flames that are incredibly effective against demons, burning them more intensely than ordinary fire. As one of the youngest characters in Demon Slayer, alongside Muichiro Tokito, she possesses surprising strength. Despite her innocent appearance, Nezuko is a fierce and powerful fighter, driven by a protective spirit.
Sho Kusakabe Moves Beyond Time Itself in Fire Force
Sho Kusakabe is incredibly powerful, with the ability to manipulate time itself. While his fire-based powers are strong, his greatest ability is the Adolla Burst, which lets him control how much things heat up and cool down. By drastically lowering the temperature around him, he effectively slows down time for everyone else, making it seem like he’s moving at a normal pace while everything around him freezes.
Sho is an incredibly skilled swordsman—so much so that he can defeat opponents without even drawing his blade. The sheer power of his attacks is often enough to overwhelm them. He’s proven this even against strong fighters like his older brother, Shinra Kusakabe, the main character from Fire Force.
Pride Twists Light into Power in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Pride was the first Homunculus created from Father’s Philosopher’s Stone, making him older than he appears. He expertly plays the part of Selim Bradley, using a childlike persona and energetic behavior to hide his real self. In reality, Pride is a being of immense power, his true form a network of shadowy tentacles that stretch out over vast areas, functioning as both sensors and incredibly dangerous weapons.
When Pride has enough light to create shadows, he’s nearly unbeatable in battle. He controls his tentacles with incredible skill, easily cutting through enemies while quickly adjusting to whatever they throw at him. This makes him especially frightening because he looks like an innocent boy, but is actually a powerful monster – a perfect example of lost innocence twisted into something dangerous.
Eri Has One of the Strongest Quirks in My Hero Academia
Eri begins her story in My Hero Academia as a young girl who suffered terrible abuse. This started because she has an incredibly strong ability called Rewind, which lets her reverse anything to how it used to be, even to the point of erasing someone completely. Because of this power, a villain named Overhaul cruelly tortured Eri, taking her blood to create bullets that could nullify other people’s abilities.
Eri’s Rewind ability is incredibly powerful, and All For One takes advantage of it to restore himself after being severely burned by Endeavor. Though she’s just a child and doesn’t fight, Eri’s Rewind was crucial to saving Deku from Overhaul. The story later shows Eri as a happy teenager, finally living the peaceful life everyone wished for her.
Rika Anchors Yuta’s Overwhelming Cursed Energy in Jujutsu Kaisen
Rika Orimoto was a typical child who didn’t seem to possess any cursed energy, until a tragic event changed everything. Her close emotional connection with Yuta was so strong that when she died, her soul became a powerful cursed spirit—even more powerful than Satoru Gojo, according to Gojo himself in JJK: 0. He stated that exorcising a curse as strong as Rika was almost impossible.
Although it was discovered that Rika’s incredibly powerful abilities came from Yuta’s family’s jujutsu skills, she still behaves like a child now that she’s a special grade cursed spirit. In this form, Rika is immensely powerful, even defeating Suguru Geto and accomplishing other amazing feats throughout the series Jujutsu Kaisen. Even after Rika was defeated and her spirit released, the cursed spirit form didn’t lose any of its strength.
Koenma Has a Secret Overwhelming Power in YuYu Hakusho
Koenma is a fascinating character who acts as a leader in the Spirit World while secretly possessing incredible fighting skills. Though he appears as a small child, he’s far more powerful than he looks. Surprisingly, Koenma usually avoids fighting, and some of the most humorous moments in YuYu Hakusho involve him trying to get away from battles.
Koenma’s Mafuukan technique lets him trap incredibly strong beings using Demon Energy, even powerful S-Class warriors like Raizen, Yomi, and Mukuro. His pacifier has collected spiritual energy for years, and unleashing it creates an impenetrable barrier. Shinobu Sensui tried desperately to overcome the Mafuukan, even though his own Sacred Energy was incompatible with the technique.
Sugar Can Transform Anyone into Helpless Toys in One Piece
The anime and manga series One Piece features several children who are important to the story. However, Sugar appears to be a child, but she’s actually 22 years old. She looks ten due to a power from her Devil Fruit, which granted her eternal youth. This is the opposite of Jewelry Bonney, who can make herself older using her own Devil Fruit ability, but both characters are equally strong.
Sugar’s power is incredibly dangerous, allowing her to turn people into toys and completely erase them from everyone else’s memory. While it’s theorized that Haki could potentially counteract her ability, it hasn’t been demonstrated yet. So far, the only way to restore those turned into toys, as seen in Dressrosa, was to knock Sugar unconscious, like Usopp managed to do.
Alluka Zoldyck Channels Limitless Wishes in Hunter x Hunter
Honestly, when Meruem hatched, he was just unbelievably powerful – nothing could touch him! The only one Neferpitou seemed to think might be a problem was Gon, but even then, it would have to be grown-up Gon. But then Gon pushed himself way too far fighting Meruem and fell into this awful coma, and even the best Nen healers couldn’t bring him out of it. It was Alluka, surprisingly, who managed to save him, though it didn’t actually fix the consequences of the huge sacrifice he made with his Nen contract.
Alluka is home to a powerful entity called Nanika, who can grant wishes, though with several restrictions. Because there doesn’t appear to be a limit to how many wishes Nanika can fulfill, the 12-year-old Alluka is considered one of the most powerful characters in Hunter x Hunter. Nanika’s abilities are different from typical battle-focused powers in shonen anime, offering a uniquely effective form of strength, despite the fact that Alluka can’t benefit from Nanika’s wish-granting herself.
