Antony Starr Is Quietly Jealous Of 1 Of The Boys Season 5’s Plotlines

Anthony Starr is a key part of the show The Boys, but he admits he’s a little jealous of one of his co-stars and the stories they get to tell.

Since the start of the show The Boys in 2019, Antony Starr has portrayed its central, complex character, Homelander. He’s joined by a diverse ensemble cast including Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, Erin Moriarty as Starlight, Chace Crawford as The Deep, Tomer Capone as Frenchie, and Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender, Simon Pegg, who plays Billy Butcher’s coworker The Deep, revealed the surprising source of Starr’s frustration: envy. Pegg explained that Starr feels a bit jealous of The Deep consistently getting compelling storylines each season, stating, “Every year, you’ve got some really good stuff, man.” You can find the complete quote from Pegg below.

When I first stepped onto the set, I was blown away. The attention to detail – things like the periscope and all the posters – was incredible. And the cyber truck? It’s always something unexpected and hilarious, even though I probably shouldn’t be surprised anymore!

Antony always compliments my work, saying I consistently deliver great material. This year, Kripke presented us with a storyline that I found particularly hilarious. The podcast segments were a lot of fun to create, and fans seem to be really enjoying them too, especially Black Noir’s role. I’m really going to miss reading the scripts each season and discovering what happens next.

Throughout The Boys, The Deep consistently demonstrated significant character flaws. In the very first episode, he sexually harassed and seemingly assaulted Starlight, a new member of The Seven, and this was later confirmed in season 3. This incident created conflict between them, and ultimately, Starlight publicly revealed what had happened.

Ultimately, The Deep is removed from The Seven because they side with Starlight and fear the scandal will damage their image. However, he remains a part of the show and is later reinstated into the core group of Supes by Homelander.

Even though his backstory is quite dark, the character of The Deep gets many ridiculous and often hilarious scenes in The Boys. One particularly memorable and shocking moment from the third season’s episode “Herogasm” reveals he had a sexual encounter with an octopus.

Season 5 of The Boys sees The Deep return to his more comical and carefree behavior, downplaying the character’s previously explored serious side. Showrunner Eric Kripke is embracing The Deep’s self-centered and wealthy personality by having him drive a futuristic truck—a fictionalized version of the Tesla Cybertruck.

Crawford also points out that Deep has had some really funny interactions with other characters over the course of the show. This season, his partnership with Black Noir is a highlight, especially as the co-hosts of the podcast “Manhandled.” Crawford says this storyline was one of the funniest parts of the pitch for season 5 of The Boys.

With three episodes remaining, there’s still plenty of opportunity to see how Homelander’s story develops. While Karl Urban (who plays Billy Butcher) might sometimes wish he had Anthony Starr’s (Homelander) easier role, fans will have to wait and see who ultimately prevails as the fifth season of The Boys ends.
