Netflix’s record-breaking shark horror movie has received a massive sequel update.
Great news for fans of the giant shark movie! A sequel to 2024’s Under Paris is officially in the works. The original film, which featured a massive shark terrorizing the Seine River in Paris, was a huge success on Netflix, becoming the most popular French film and one of the most-watched foreign-language films ever on the platform. Development on Under Paris 2 began late last year, and the project has now reached a key stage.
Filming for the shark sequel Under Paris 2 has officially started in southern France, as reported by Variety. Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes will reprise their roles as marine researcher Sophia and police diver Adil, respectively. Anne Marivin is also returning as the Mayor of Paris, and they’ll be joined by new cast members Guillaume Gouix, Phillippe Bas, and Manon Bresch. The story picks up three years after the first film, with Sophia and Adil working together to find Lilith, the shark, who has begun to reproduce in the flooded city.

Three years after a tragic triathlon accident in Paris, the city center is now underwater. Sophia and Adil team up again for a dangerous mission: to find Lilith, the first of the creatures terrorizing the Seine, which is now filled with sharks. Their search will reveal a shocking truth about the origins of these deadly animals…
Xavier Gens, the original film’s director and co-writer, is back as a writer alongside Gregory Levasseur, Frédéric Garcia, William Laboury, and Fanny Talmone. They’re joined by new director Alexandre Aja, known for the 2019 horror film Crawl and the 2024 survival thriller Never Let Go, which starred Halle Berry. Both Gens and Aja are also associate producers on the project, with Vincent Roget serving as the main producer. Aja shared his excitement about contributing as both director and writer for this shark sequel.
I’ve always been a fan of Paris, and I’d dreamed of directing a shark film. So, when the chance arose to really expand on the story, I immediately agreed.
Similar to the movie Jaws, Under Paris follows scientists attempting to capture a mutated shark in the Seine River. However, Under Paris expands on this premise, showcasing a wider range of terrifying events that threaten not just Paris, but the entire world. The film’s intense and graphic violence makes it a standout shark movie, delivering a thrilling and increasingly grim disaster experience.
At the conclusion of Under Paris, Lilith remains at large, and Paris is overwhelmed by flooding as her offspring multiply. A post-credits scene shows the mutant sharks have spread globally, creating a near-apocalyptic scenario. The sequel, set three years later and featuring the original characters, appears to be expanding the story’s reach while giving the main duo a focused mission: to repair a world that’s been severely damaged.
Production on Under Paris 2 has just started, so details about the movie will likely take a while to emerge. However, the basic story outline suggests it will be a strong sequel, building on the original and using current events in Paris and globally to move the plot forward.
