Pixar is back on top with a new success! Following the disappointing performance of Elio in cinemas last year, their latest film has become a hit with audiences in theaters and on demand.
According to Flix Patrol, the animated movie Hoppers is now the most popular title for rent or purchase on the Apple TV Store in both Canada and the United States. It quickly became a hit on digital platforms, achieving this ranking just one day after its release. Hoppers has a little over a month to maintain its top position before it’s .
I just saw Hoppers, and it’s a really interesting concept! The film, directed by Daniel Chong and written by Chong and Jesse Andrews, imagines a future where scientists have figured out how to transfer your mind into a realistic robotic animal. It’s basically a way for people to truly connect with – and experience the world like – animals. A pretty wild premise, and I’m eager to see where it goes!
Piper Curda, known for her roles on the Disney Channel, stars as Mabel Tanaka in Hoppers, a series where an animal-loving character discovers incredible secrets about the animal world using new technology, according to the show’s description.
Hoppers Had Better Luck at the Box Office Than Elio
Pixar’s Hoppers quickly became a box office success, earning $88 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This was the best start for a new Pixar movie since Coco in 2017. Great reviews and audience buzz kept Hoppers popular in theaters, where it eventually made a total of $375 million.
Pixar’s latest film, Hoppers, marked a successful return to theaters for the animation studio. Pixar faced challenges after the start of the coronavirus pandemic, when Disney released Soul, Luca, and Turning Red directly on Disney+. Their subsequent theatrical releases haven’t performed well, with Inside Out 2 being the only film to reach pre-pandemic box office levels.
When the pandemic forced theaters to close, Onward didn’t have a long run in cinemas – a rare occurrence for Pixar in over ten years. While it initially earned $20.8 million domestically (the lowest opening for a Pixar film), it ultimately grossed $154 million worldwide. Considering the reported production cost of $150 to $200 million, Onward resulted in significant financial losses for Disney and Pixar.
Pixar’s Upcoming Slate Features a Mix of Sequels and Originals
Okay, so Elio and Hoppers didn’t come close to the massive success of Inside Out 2 this year – that movie made over $1.7 billion! But as a Pixar fan, I’m really glad to hear they’re still dedicated to creating totally new, original stories, alongside making more of the movies we already love. I was excited to see that Pete Docter, their Chief Creative Officer, said at the Annecy Animation Festival last year that they have some of the best ideas and projects they’ve ever had in development. That gives me a lot of hope for the future of Pixar!
Pixar has a lot of exciting projects coming up, including a new movie set to release in June. They’re also developing sequels to some of their most popular films, like Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles, and Coco.
I’m so excited for the next big project, which is currently scheduled to come out in March 2027! I’ve also heard about Ono Ghost Market, a really cool idea about a marketplace where ghosts and people mingle. And get this – Domee Shi, the director of Turning Red, is working on a new movie too! Apparently, it’s going to be a totally fresh take on the classic Disney musical, almost like a rebellious spin on it.
Hoppers is available to rent on PVOD platforms.
